Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Financial Feasibility Analysis in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting education plays an important role in developing students’ knowledge and skills required to evaluate the financial practicality of proposed business activities. Financial feasibility analysis involves examining the financial requirements, expected revenues, costs, profitability, cash flows, and financial risks associated with a proposed business venture. However, accounting students may have inadequate knowledge of how financial information can be used to determine whether a business proposal is financially feasible. This study therefore examines the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of financial feasibility analysis in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting education provides students with knowledge of financial accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and financial analysis. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, and project-based activities, students learn how to prepare and interpret financial information, analyze costs and revenues, assess profitability, and evaluate financial performance. These areas of accounting knowledge provide a foundation for understanding the processes involved in financial feasibility analysis. Relevant and practically oriented accounting education can therefore help students develop the knowledge required to examine the financial aspects of proposed business ventures. Students’ knowledge of financial feasibility analysis refers to their ability to identify, explain, and apply financial techniques used to assess whether a proposed business activity is financially practical and sustainable. This includes understanding projected revenues and expenses, start-up and operating costs, cash-flow requirements, profitability expectations, investment requirements, and potential financial risks. Adequate knowledge of financial feasibility analysis enables students to assess the financial implications of business proposals and provide informed conclusions about their financial practicality. Accounting education may therefore influence students’ ability to understand and apply financial feasibility concepts. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their knowledge of financial feasibility analysis. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques appropriate for determining the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of financial feasibility analysis. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive effect on students’ knowledge of financial feasibility analysis. Students with stronger exposure to relevant accounting instruction and practical activities are expected to demonstrate better understanding of how financial information can be used to assess proposed business ventures. The study may also establish that practical exercises involving budgeting, projected financial statements, cost analysis, cash-flow assessment, and profitability evaluation strengthen students’ knowledge of financial feasibility analysis. The findings are expected to have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting educators may need to provide students with more opportunities to apply accounting concepts to the financial evaluation of proposed business ventures. Practical business cases, feasibility study exercises, financial projections, budgeting activities, and profitability analysis can help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with real-world business evaluation. Such activities may improve students’ analytical skills and make accounting education more practically relevant. The study will be significant to accounting education students, accounting educators, polytechnic administrators, curriculum planners, entrepreneurs, professional accounting bodies, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may benefit from improved knowledge of financial feasibility analysis and greater preparedness for accounting and entrepreneurial responsibilities. Educators and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen practical financial analysis components of accounting programmes, while entrepreneurs and employers may benefit from graduates who can understand and apply financial feasibility concepts in business situations. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics strengthen accounting education by incorporating financial feasibility analysis activities into relevant accounting courses. Accounting educators should expose students to realistic business proposals and provide opportunities to analyze projected revenues, costs, cash flows, profitability, and financial requirements. Students should also be encouraged to prepare and evaluate simple financial feasibility reports as part of their practical learning activities. The study concludes that effective and practically oriented accounting education can enhance students’ knowledge of financial feasibility analysis and better prepare them for professional accounting and business evaluation responsibilities.
