Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Financial Planning for Start-Up Businesses in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting education refers to the systematic teaching and learning of accounting concepts, principles, procedures, and practices that equip students with the knowledge required to understand and apply financial information. Knowledge of financial planning for start-up businesses is important to accounting students because new businesses require careful planning of capital requirements, expected income and expenses, cash flows, budgets, and other financial needs. However, some students may have inadequate knowledge of how financial planning supports the establishment and early management of start-up businesses. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of financial planning for start-up businesses in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting education exposes students to financial planning concepts through courses such as financial accounting, management accounting, entrepreneurship, and related business subjects. Students may learn about budgeting, cash flow planning, capital requirements, cost estimation, revenue projections, financial statements, and financial control. Classroom instruction, practical exercises, business case studies, and financial planning activities can help students understand how financial information is used to plan the financial operations of a new business. These learning experiences may provide students with the knowledge required to identify and evaluate the financial requirements associated with establishing a start-up business. Students’ knowledge of financial planning for start-up businesses refers to their understanding of the processes involved in estimating financial requirements, preparing budgets, projecting revenues and expenses, planning cash flows, identifying sources of finance, and monitoring the financial needs of a new business. Adequate knowledge enables students to understand how financial planning can support effective allocation and management of limited resources during the early stages of business development. Accounting education may improve this knowledge by providing students with relevant accounting principles and practical opportunities to apply financial planning concepts to business situations. This can strengthen students’ understanding of the financial considerations involved in starting and sustaining a new business. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of financial planning for start-up businesses. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured knowledge assessment designed to measure students’ understanding of financial planning for start-up businesses. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test employed to determine the effect of accounting education on students’ financial planning knowledge. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive effect on students’ knowledge of financial planning for start-up businesses. Students who receive appropriate accounting instruction are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of budgeting, cash flow planning, capital requirements, revenue and expense projections, and other financial considerations relevant to new businesses. The study is also expected to indicate that practical financial planning exercises can strengthen students’ ability to understand the financial requirements associated with establishing and managing start-up businesses. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical financial planning activities when teaching accounting and entrepreneurship-related courses. Students can be exposed to realistic start-up business scenarios requiring them to estimate financial requirements, prepare simple budgets, project cash flows, and evaluate potential financial needs. Such activities can help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with practical financial planning situations encountered by new businesses. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, heads of accounting departments, entrepreneurship educators, curriculum planners, and polytechnic authorities. Students may benefit from improved knowledge of financial planning and greater preparedness to apply accounting knowledge in entrepreneurial settings. Lecturers may gain useful information for strengthening practical accounting and entrepreneurship instruction, while accounting departments and curriculum planners may use the findings to improve the financial planning components of relevant courses. Polytechnic authorities may also benefit from evidence supporting stronger practical preparation of students for business and employment opportunities. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics strengthen practical instruction on financial planning for start-up businesses. Lecturers should provide students with practical exercises involving budgeting, cash flow projections, capital requirements, revenue forecasting, cost estimation, and basic financial planning for new businesses. Collaboration between accounting and entrepreneurship-related courses may also provide students with broader opportunities to apply financial planning concepts. The study concludes that effective accounting education can improve students’ knowledge of financial planning for start-up businesses and strengthen their preparedness to apply accounting knowledge in entrepreneurial and business environments.
