Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Understanding of Equity Financing Decisions in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting Education is essential for developing students’ knowledge of financial concepts and their ability to understand business financing decisions. Equity financing decisions involve determining how businesses can raise capital through the issuance of shares and assessing the implications of such financing for ownership, control, and business growth. However, students may have difficulty understanding equity financing decisions when accounting instruction is largely theoretical and provides limited exposure to practical financing situations. This study therefore examines the effect of Accounting Education on students’ understanding of equity financing decisions in Nigerian Polytechnics. Accounting Education exposes students to financial accounting, financial management, financial reporting, sources of business finance, and capital structure concepts. Through classroom instruction, accounting exercises, financial statement analysis, and practical business examples, students can develop knowledge of how organizations obtain and utilize financial resources. Exposure to equity-related accounting concepts can also help students understand share capital, ordinary shares, preference shares, retained earnings, ownership structure, and the financial implications of raising capital through equity. Students’ understanding of equity financing decisions refers to their ability to explain the meaning, characteristics, advantages, limitations, and implications of raising business capital through equity sources. Such understanding enables students to distinguish equity financing from debt financing and assess how equity financing can affect ownership interests, control, risk, and the financial structure of a business. Effective Accounting Education is expected to strengthen this understanding by providing students with relevant accounting knowledge and opportunities to apply financing concepts to practical business situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian Polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to Accounting Education and their understanding of equity financing decisions. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Accounting Education on students’ understanding of equity financing decisions. The study is expected to establish that Accounting Education has a significant positive effect on students’ understanding of equity financing decisions. Students with stronger accounting knowledge and greater exposure to financial concepts are expected to demonstrate better understanding of the processes and implications associated with raising capital through equity. The study may also establish that practical accounting activities involving share capital, ownership structure, and financing alternatives can improve students’ ability to understand equity financing decisions. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in Nigerian Polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to place greater emphasis on practical approaches to teaching equity financing and provide students with opportunities to examine realistic business financing situations. The use of company financial statements, share capital examples, classroom exercises, and case-based activities may help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with actual financing decisions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners, polytechnic administrators, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may gain improved knowledge of business financing and develop skills relevant to accounting and financial management practice. Lecturers may benefit from identifying effective approaches for teaching equity financing concepts, while curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen the practical content of Accounting Education programmes. The study recommends that Nigerian Polytechnics should strengthen the teaching of equity financing concepts through practical accounting exercises, financial statement analysis, case studies, and real-world business examples. Accounting lecturers should expose students to different equity financing alternatives and their implications for ownership, control, and business capital structure. The study concludes that effective Accounting Education can significantly improve students’ understanding of equity financing decisions and better prepare them for accounting and financial decision-making responsibilities.
