Effect of Accounting Knowledge on Students’ Understanding of Business Liquidity in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

This study examined the effect of accounting knowledge on students’ understanding of business liquidity in Nigerian universities. Accounting knowledge refers to students’ understanding of accounting concepts, principles, procedures and financial reporting practices, while business liquidity refers to the ability of a business to meet its short-term financial obligations as they become due. Understanding business liquidity is important in accounting education because students are expected to interpret financial information and assess whether a business has sufficient short-term resources to meet its current obligations. The study was motivated by the observation that some accounting students may understand basic accounting procedures but experience difficulties when interpreting liquidity information and explaining what it indicates about the financial condition of a business. Adequate accounting knowledge may provide students with the foundation required to understand current assets, current liabilities, working capital and liquidity measures. The study therefore investigated whether accounting knowledge has a significant effect on students’ understanding of business liquidity in Nigerian universities. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ accounting knowledge and their understanding of business liquidity. Accounting knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of accounting concepts, principles, financial statement elements and financial reporting, while understanding of business liquidity was considered in terms of students’ ability to identify current assets and liabilities, explain working capital, interpret liquidity information and understand the implications of a business’s ability to meet its short-term obligations. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting knowledge has a significant effect on students’ understanding of business liquidity. Students with adequate accounting knowledge may be better able to recognize the financial items that influence liquidity and understand their relationship with short-term obligations. Knowledge of current assets, current liabilities, cash flows and working capital can help students interpret the short-term financial position of a business more effectively. Accounting knowledge may also enable students to understand the meaning and significance of liquidity measures and distinguish between businesses with stronger or weaker short-term financial positions. Furthermore, practical exposure to financial statements and liquidity-related accounting problems can help students connect theoretical knowledge with the assessment of actual business conditions. The study further recognizes that understanding liquidity requires students to interpret financial information rather than simply memorize accounting definitions or formulas. Students need to understand why liquidity is important, how current assets and liabilities affect short-term financial stability and what changes in liquidity may imply for business operations. Practical classroom exercises involving financial statements, working capital calculations, business cases and liquidity analysis can provide students with opportunities to apply accounting knowledge to realistic situations. Such activities can strengthen students’ analytical abilities and improve their capacity to explain the financial condition of a business based on available accounting information. The findings will be useful to accounting students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian universities. Lecturers should provide students with practical financial statements and accounting exercises that require them to identify, calculate and interpret liquidity-related information. Accounting departments should also integrate liquidity analysis, financial statement interpretation and practical business cases into relevant accounting courses. Students should be encouraged to develop strong accounting knowledge and regularly practice interpreting financial information relating to current assets, current liabilities and working capital. The study concludes that strengthening accounting knowledge can improve students’ understanding of business liquidity and contribute to better analytical skills, financial interpretation, accounting competence and professional preparedness among accounting students in Nigerian universities.
