Effect of Accounting Question Difficulty on Students’ Performance in Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

This study examined the effect of accounting question difficulty on students’ performance in Financial Accounting in Nigerian universities. Assessment is an essential component of accounting education because it provides a means of determining the extent to which students have acquired, understood and can apply accounting knowledge and skills. The difficulty level of examination questions is particularly important because the nature and complexity of questions presented to students may influence their ability to demonstrate their actual level of learning. Accounting question difficulty refers to the degree of cognitive, conceptual, computational and analytical challenge presented by an accounting question, including the extent to which a question requires simple recall, understanding, application, analysis, interpretation or problem-solving. Students’ performance in Financial Accounting refers to their level of achievement in understanding accounting concepts, applying accounting principles, performing accounting calculations, preparing financial statements, interpreting accounting information and solving financial accounting problems. This study therefore investigated whether the difficulty level of accounting questions has a significant effect on students’ performance in Financial Accounting in Nigerian universities. The study was motivated by concerns regarding the influence of examination questions on students’ academic performance in Financial Accounting. Financial Accounting requires students to acquire both theoretical and practical competencies, and examination questions are expected to provide an appropriate measure of these competencies. Questions that are too simple may fail to adequately assess students’ deeper understanding and application of accounting knowledge, while questions that are excessively difficult may prevent students from demonstrating knowledge they have actually acquired. The balance between question difficulty and students’ level of preparation is therefore important for producing meaningful assessment outcomes. Where questions are appropriately structured and aligned with instructional objectives, they may encourage students to understand accounting concepts and apply them effectively. However, poorly designed questions may create unnecessary barriers to students’ performance and may reduce the validity of examination results. The study consequently examined accounting question difficulty as a factor that may influence students’ performance in Financial Accounting. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting students offering Financial Accounting courses in selected Nigerian universities. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on accounting question difficulty and students’ performance in Financial Accounting. The instrument covered different levels of question difficulty, including questions requiring factual recall, conceptual understanding, application of accounting principles, computational procedures, interpretation of financial information, analysis of accounting situations and problem-solving. Students’ Financial Accounting performance was assessed based on their ability to understand accounting concepts, apply accounting principles, record and classify accounting transactions, prepare financial statements, perform accounting calculations and interpret financial information. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether accounting question difficulty has a statistically significant effect on students’ performance in Financial Accounting. The study is expected to establish that accounting question difficulty has a significant effect on students’ performance in Financial Accounting. The level of difficulty of an examination question may determine the extent to which students are able to demonstrate their acquired accounting knowledge and skills. Questions requiring basic recall and straightforward application may be easier for students to answer, while questions involving multiple accounting concepts, unfamiliar situations, extensive calculations and analytical reasoning may present greater challenges. Appropriate variation in question difficulty may allow examinations to distinguish between different levels of student understanding and provide a more comprehensive assessment of accounting competence. The study further recognizes that question difficulty is not determined solely by the number of calculations required. A question may be difficult because it involves unfamiliar accounting concepts, complex relationships between accounting elements, multiple stages of reasoning or the need to interpret information before selecting an appropriate solution. Financial Accounting questions may require students to identify relevant information, determine the correct accounting treatment, apply accounting principles and calculate the required figures before arriving at a final answer. Students who have developed strong conceptual and analytical skills may be better able to handle such questions, whereas students who depend primarily on memorization may experience greater difficulty when confronted with unfamiliar accounting problems. The relationship between question difficulty and student performance may also be influenced by the alignment between classroom instruction and assessment. When students are regularly exposed to questions of varying levels of difficulty during classroom exercises, assignments and continuous assessment, they may become more prepared to handle complex examination questions. Conversely, students who are exposed predominantly to simple exercises may experience difficulties when examination questions require higher levels of application and analysis. Lecturers therefore have an important role in preparing students for different levels of accounting question difficulty through progressive classroom practice and appropriately structured assessment activities. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students because they may increase awareness of the importance of preparing for questions that require different levels of cognitive and accounting skills. Students may be encouraged to move beyond memorizing accounting definitions and procedures and develop the ability to apply concepts to unfamiliar situations. Regular practice with questions of increasing difficulty may help students improve their problem-solving, computational, analytical and interpretative abilities. Students may also develop greater confidence in approaching complex Financial Accounting questions when they have sufficient exposure to challenging but appropriately structured exercises. The findings will also be beneficial to Financial Accounting lecturers in Nigerian universities. The study may provide lecturers with information about the influence of question difficulty on students’ performance and encourage more deliberate examination design. Lecturers may use questions that reflect different levels of learning, ranging from basic knowledge and understanding to application, analysis and problem-solving. Such variation can provide a broader assessment of students’ competencies and prevent examinations from focusing excessively on either simple recall or unnecessarily complex tasks. Lecturers may also use students’ responses to identify areas where question difficulty creates significant learning challenges. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and university administrators. The findings may provide a basis for reviewing assessment policies and examination practices within Accounting Education programmes. Curriculum planners should ensure that assessment requirements are consistent with course objectives and the expected level of student learning. Examination questions should be appropriately matched to the content taught, the academic level of the students and the competencies expected from the course. Universities may also provide training and professional development opportunities for lecturers on assessment design, question construction and evaluation of question difficulty. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of balancing different levels of question difficulty. An effective Financial Accounting examination should provide a reasonable distribution of questions that assess knowledge, understanding, application and higher-order thinking. Questions at different levels can provide students with opportunities to demonstrate a range of competencies while allowing lecturers to determine the depth of students’ learning. Excessive concentration of very easy questions may result in an inadequate assessment of advanced accounting competence, while an examination dominated by highly difficult questions may disadvantage students and obscure the distinction between lack of knowledge and excessive assessment difficulty. The study also highlights the importance of clarity in accounting question construction. Question difficulty should arise primarily from the accounting knowledge and reasoning required rather than from unclear wording, ambiguous instructions or unnecessarily complicated presentation. Poorly worded questions may cause students to misunderstand what is being asked and may negatively affect their performance even when they possess adequate accounting knowledge. Accounting lecturers should therefore ensure that examination questions are clearly stated, logically structured and free from unnecessary ambiguity. Practical and case-based questions may also provide useful opportunities for assessing students’ ability to apply Financial Accounting knowledge. Questions based on realistic business transactions and financial reporting situations can require students to interpret information, select appropriate accounting procedures and justify their conclusions. Such questions can help determine whether students are capable of transferring classroom knowledge to practical accounting situations. However, the complexity of these questions should be appropriate to students’ academic level and the content covered during instruction. The study may also have implications for continuous assessment practices. Regular exposure to different levels of question difficulty through quizzes, assignments, class tests and practical exercises can help students gradually develop the skills required for more challenging Financial Accounting tasks. Continuous assessment can also enable lecturers to identify students who consistently struggle with complex questions and provide additional academic support. A progressive approach to assessment may therefore help students build confidence and competence before undertaking major examinations. Technology can provide additional opportunities for designing and practicing accounting questions at different levels of difficulty. Digital learning platforms can provide students with structured exercises that move from basic questions to more complex accounting problems. Computer-based assessment can also allow lecturers to create varied question types and provide timely feedback. However, technology-supported assessment should be carefully designed to ensure that question difficulty reflects the intended learning objectives and does not introduce unnecessary technical challenges unrelated to accounting competence. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian universities should ensure that Financial Accounting examinations contain appropriately varied levels of question difficulty. Accounting lecturers should develop questions that assess knowledge, understanding, application, analysis and problem-solving in accordance with the objectives and level of the course. Questions should be neither excessively simple nor unnecessarily difficult, and their complexity should be related to the accounting competencies students are expected to acquire. The study further recommends that lecturers should expose students to progressively challenging Financial Accounting questions throughout the semester. Classroom exercises, assignments and continuous assessments should include a suitable mixture of straightforward and complex questions to prepare students for different examination demands. Lecturers should also provide constructive feedback on students’ performance, particularly where errors result from misunderstanding accounting concepts or difficulty applying knowledge to unfamiliar situations. University administrators and curriculum planners should support lecturers through professional development programmes focused on effective assessment design, question construction, cognitive levels of assessment and evaluation of examination quality. Examination questions should be reviewed periodically to ensure that their level of difficulty is appropriate, clear and aligned with course objectives. Where possible, assessment procedures should also incorporate mechanisms for evaluating whether questions accurately measure students’ accounting knowledge and skills. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting question difficulty in influencing students’ performance in Financial Accounting in Nigerian universities. The difficulty level of examination questions can affect students’ ability to demonstrate their accounting knowledge, computational competence, conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Appropriately designed questions that provide a balanced range of difficulty can promote meaningful assessment and provide a more accurate indication of students’ Financial Accounting competence. Strengthening examination practices through clear question construction, appropriate variation in difficulty, progressive classroom practice and alignment with learning objectives can therefore contribute to improved student performance and more effective assessment in Financial Accounting.
