Effect of Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises on Students’ Customer-Handling Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Customer-handling skills are important professional competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting personnel frequently interact with clients, customers, suppliers, staff members, financial institutions, and other stakeholders while providing accounting-related services. Effective service delivery requires clear communication, active listening, accurate understanding of customer needs, professional conduct, timely response to enquiries, appropriate complaint handling, problem-solving, confidentiality, and effective follow-up. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to practise customer-facing accounting activities in realistic workplace environments, which may create a gap between classroom learning and the interpersonal requirements of accounting-related occupations. Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises provide students with opportunities to practise responding to accounting enquiries, explaining financial information, processing customer requests, handling complaints, resolving routine service problems, and communicating with clients through simulated workplace situations. Such practical exercises may strengthen students' ability to manage accounting service interactions professionally and effectively. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises on students' customer-handling skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop professional competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge, interpersonal abilities, and workplace skills enhances students' productivity, employability, and professional preparedness. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises may influence students' customer-handling skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, customer-handling skills assessment scales, accounting service-delivery scenarios, role-play activities, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, simulated customer enquiries, complaint-handling tasks, communication exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as customer reception, customer identification, customer enquiry handling, accounting enquiry handling, active listening, questioning techniques, customer-needs identification, information clarification, service explanation, accounting-information explanation, financial-information explanation, transaction explanation, account-information explanation, payment-information explanation, invoice explanation, receipt explanation, statement explanation, account-balance explanation, transaction-status explanation, service-process explanation, procedure explanation, customer guidance, service instruction, communication clarity, verbal communication, written communication, telephone communication, email communication, chat communication, professional language, appropriate tone, courtesy, respect, patience, empathy, professionalism, customer attention, responsiveness, timely response, service accuracy, information accuracy, transaction accuracy, document accuracy, customer-information verification, account-information verification, transaction verification, identity verification, request verification, confidentiality, financial-information protection, customer-data protection, privacy awareness, complaint reception, complaint identification, complaint classification, complaint documentation, complaint acknowledgement, complaint response, complaint investigation, complaint escalation, complaint resolution, service recovery, conflict management, conflict resolution, difficult-customer handling, dissatisfied-customer handling, customer reassurance, customer explanation, customer follow-up, service monitoring, customer-feedback collection, customer-feedback interpretation, service-quality monitoring, customer satisfaction, customer retention, customer relationship management, customer support, customer referral, service documentation, customer-record maintenance, interaction documentation, enquiry logging, complaint logging, service-request logging, customer-account documentation, communication records, follow-up records, service reports, customer-service reporting, problem identification, problem analysis, problem-solving, decision-making, service prioritization, issue escalation, appropriate referral, professional judgement, workplace etiquette, telephone etiquette, email etiquette, digital communication etiquette, office communication, interpersonal communication, teamwork, adaptability, emotional control, self-confidence, professional confidence, ethical conduct, integrity, responsibility, accountability, reliability, time management, task organization, service coordination, customer-service workflow, service scheduling, appointment handling, customer queue management, service waiting-time management, customer notification, transaction-update communication, service-status communication, service completion communication, customer instruction, customer education, accounting-process guidance, basic financial-literacy communication, service clarification, misunderstanding resolution, documentation review, error communication, correction communication, apology procedures, service recovery communication, customer reassurance, difficult-enquiry management, sensitive-enquiry management, customer complaint follow-up, unresolved-case monitoring, customer feedback, customer satisfaction assessment, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, role-play activities, case studies, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging customer-service scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises, practical experiences, and customer-handling skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises on students' customer-handling skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, customer-handling skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises have a significant positive effect on students' customer-handling skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Accounting Service-Delivery Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, establishing realistic accounting customer-service simulation environments, incorporating customer-enquiry and complaint-handling activities, strengthening students' professional communication and relationship-management skills, providing structured role-play and workplace scenarios, improving digital customer-service competencies, providing repeated practical exercises and feedback, expanding collaboration between polytechnics and accounting workplaces, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary customer-service and professional communication requirements in Nigeria.
