Effect of Accounting Students’ Participation in Research Conferences on Their Academic Research Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Participation in research conferences refers to students’ involvement in academic gatherings where researchers, scholars, and students present, discuss, and exchange research ideas and findings. Academic research skills are important for accounting students because they enable them to identify research problems, review relevant literature, collect and analyze data, interpret findings, and communicate research outcomes effectively. However, some accounting students have limited exposure to academic research environments outside the classroom, which may restrict their opportunities to develop practical research competencies. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of accounting students’ participation in research conferences on their academic research skills in Nigerian universities. Research conference participation exposes students to research presentations, academic discussions, scholarly papers, methodological approaches, and emerging issues within their fields of study. Students may participate by attending research presentations, asking questions, engaging in academic discussions, presenting their own research work, or interacting with researchers and other students. These experiences can provide practical exposure to how research problems are formulated, investigated, analyzed, and communicated. Participation in such academic environments may also encourage students to become more familiar with current research practices and standards. Academic research skills refer to students’ abilities to identify researchable problems, formulate research objectives and questions, search and evaluate scholarly literature, select appropriate research methods, collect and analyze data, interpret findings, and communicate research outcomes. Participation in research conferences may contribute to the development of these skills by exposing students to different approaches to conducting and presenting research. Listening to research presentations and engaging in academic discussions may help students recognize effective research practices, while presenting their own work may provide opportunities to explain research procedures and respond to academic questions. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate survey or quasi-experimental approach depending on the selected research setting. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian universities. A suitable sample will be selected through an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ participation in research conferences and their academic research skills. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the effect of research conference participation on students’ academic research skills. The study is expected to establish that participation in research conferences has a positive effect on accounting students’ academic research skills. Students who participate actively in research conferences are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in identifying research problems, evaluating scholarly literature, understanding research methodologies, interpreting research findings, and communicating research outcomes. The study is also expected to indicate that exposure to academic research environments can provide students with practical learning experiences that complement classroom-based research instruction. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may encourage students to participate in relevant research conferences as part of their research learning experiences. Conference presentations and discussions can be integrated into research-related courses to expose students to practical examples of research design, methodology, data analysis, and academic communication. Such exposure may make research learning more engaging and help students connect theoretical research concepts with actual academic practices. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, university accounting departments, research coordinators, and university management. Students may benefit from improved research competencies and greater confidence in engaging with academic research. Lecturers may gain additional opportunities to expose students to current research practices and scholarly discussions. Accounting departments and university authorities may also use the findings to strengthen students’ participation in research-related academic activities and promote a stronger research culture within accounting education. The study recommends that Nigerian universities and accounting departments encourage and facilitate students’ participation in relevant research conferences, workshops, and academic research events. Lecturers should guide students in identifying appropriate conferences and encourage them to actively engage with research presentations and discussions. Students should also be encouraged to present their research work where suitable and use conference experiences to improve their research abilities. The study concludes that participation in research conferences can provide accounting students with valuable academic exposure and practical opportunities for developing the research skills required for successful academic and professional development.
