Effect of Bank Reconciliation Education on Students’ Ability to Identify Errors in Cash Records in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

This study examined the effect of bank reconciliation education on students’ ability to identify errors in cash records in Nigerian polytechnics. Bank reconciliation education refers to students’ understanding of the principles, procedures, and techniques involved in comparing an organization’s cash book records with the corresponding bank statement. The ability to identify errors in cash records relates to students’ capacity to detect omissions, incorrect entries, recording mistakes, and other discrepancies affecting cash transactions. The study was motivated by the importance of accurate cash records in accounting and the difficulty some students experience when identifying differences between cash book and bank statement balances. The study therefore investigated whether adequate bank reconciliation education improves students’ ability to recognize and identify errors in cash records. Bank reconciliation is an important accounting procedure used to explain differences between an organization’s cash book balance and the balance shown by the bank. These differences may arise from errors in recording transactions, unpresented cheques, outstanding lodgements, bank charges, direct payments, or other timing and recording differences. Students require adequate knowledge of bank reconciliation procedures to correctly identify the causes of discrepancies and make appropriate adjustments. Inadequate understanding may lead to difficulties in interpreting reconciliation statements and errors when solving practical accounting problems. Developing this competence is therefore important for students preparing for future responsibilities in accounting, auditing, financial reporting, and cash management. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ bank reconciliation education and their ability to identify errors in cash records. The instrument was validated by experts in accounting and accounting education, while appropriate reliability procedures were conducted to establish its consistency. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that bank reconciliation education has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to identify errors in cash records. Students with stronger knowledge of bank reconciliation principles and procedures are expected to demonstrate greater accuracy in detecting recording errors and explaining discrepancies between cash book and bank statement balances. Adequate knowledge may also improve students’ ability to analyze cash transactions, identify omissions, and determine the appropriate adjustments required during reconciliation. Conversely, inadequate knowledge may make it difficult for students to distinguish between timing differences and actual errors in cash records. The study also emphasizes the importance of practical approaches to teaching bank reconciliation in Nigerian polytechnics. Lecturers can improve students’ understanding through practical reconciliation exercises, worked examples, case studies, and classroom activities involving different types of cash record discrepancies. Students should be given opportunities to compare cash books with bank statements and determine the causes of differences between the two records. Such activities can help students develop analytical and problem-solving skills while connecting theoretical accounting concepts with practical applications. Regular practice may also improve students’ confidence and accuracy when handling bank reconciliation problems. The findings of the study are expected to be useful to accounting students, lecturers, accounting departments, curriculum developers, and professional accounting organizations. For students, improved bank reconciliation knowledge can strengthen their ability to detect accounting errors and accurately interpret cash records. Lecturers may use the findings to identify areas where students experience difficulties and adopt more practical teaching approaches. Curriculum developers may also strengthen accounting courses by incorporating additional bank reconciliation exercises and error-identification activities. This can help ensure that students acquire practical competencies alongside their theoretical accounting knowledge. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen the teaching of bank reconciliation through practical exercises, case studies, transaction analysis, and regular assessment. Lecturers should provide students with sufficient opportunities to identify different types of errors and discrepancies in cash records and explain the procedures for correcting them. Students should also engage in continuous practice of bank reconciliation questions and practical accounting exercises. Overall, the study concludes that effective bank reconciliation education is important for improving students’ ability to identify errors in cash records and developing their competence in practical accounting activities.
