Effect of Break-Even Analysis Exercises on Students’ Profit Planning Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Break-even analysis is an important component of management accounting education because it enables students to understand the relationship between sales volume, selling price, variable costs, fixed costs, contribution, and profit. Accounting education students require practical skills in applying break-even concepts to business situations in order to determine the level of sales required to avoid losses and plan for desired profit levels. However, students may experience difficulties applying break-even concepts when instruction relies mainly on theoretical explanations and routine numerical exercises without sufficient exposure to realistic business scenarios. Break-Even Analysis Exercises provide students with opportunities to calculate break-even points, contribution margins, margin of safety, target sales, and profit levels and to examine how changes in costs, selling prices, and sales volume affect profitability. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of break-even analysis exercises on students' profit planning skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical break-even analysis exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes how learners acquire, organize, process, retain, and apply information, providing a suitable framework for understanding students' ability to interpret relationships among costs, sales, contribution, and profit. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how break-even analysis exercises may influence students' profit planning skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Break-even analysis exercises will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of practical exercises, identification of fixed and variable costs, calculation of contribution margin, contribution-to-sales ratio, break-even point in units, break-even point in sales value, margin of safety, target profit analysis, required sales for desired profit, profit-volume analysis, cost-volume-profit relationships, changes in selling price, changes in variable costs, changes in fixed costs, sales-volume analysis, sensitivity analysis, graphical break-even analysis, realistic business cases, problem-solving activities, group exercises, individual tasks, spreadsheet-based analysis, simulations, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' profit planning skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to set realistic profit targets, estimate sales required to achieve desired profit, analyse cost behaviour, determine contribution, calculate and interpret break-even points, assess margin of safety, evaluate the effect of changes in selling price and costs on profit, forecast profit at different sales volumes, compare alternative profit-planning strategies, conduct cost-volume-profit analysis, interpret profit-volume charts, evaluate operating risk, make pricing decisions, assess sales targets, identify factors affecting profitability, analyse changes in assumptions, and recommend appropriate profit-planning decisions. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized break-even analysis tests, practical cost-volume-profit tasks, profit-planning case studies, business scenarios, graphical analysis exercises, spreadsheet-based tasks, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to break-even analysis exercises, practical learning experiences, and levels of profit planning skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of break-even analysis exercises on students' profit planning skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, profit planning skill scores before and after exposure to break-even analysis exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional management accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that break-even analysis exercises have a significant positive effect on students' profit planning skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical break-even analysis exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to analyse cost behaviour, calculate contribution and break-even points, determine margin of safety, establish sales targets, forecast profit, and evaluate the effect of changes in costs and selling prices on profitability than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical exercises may help students understand the relationship between sales volume, costs, contribution, and profit and apply these relationships to realistic business situations. Target-profit exercises may strengthen students' ability to determine the level of sales required to achieve specific profit objectives. Sensitivity and scenario analysis may improve students' ability to assess how changes in selling prices, variable costs, fixed costs, and sales volume affect planned profit. Graphical break-even analysis may further strengthen students' ability to interpret cost-volume-profit relationships and identify the point at which total revenue equals total cost. Spreadsheet-based exercises and simulations may improve students' ability to organize financial information, perform calculations accurately, evaluate alternative assumptions, and support profit-planning decisions using technology. However, complex calculations, inadequate practical resources, limited access to spreadsheet and accounting software, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty interpreting cost-volume-profit relationships may reduce the effectiveness of break-even analysis exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised break-even analysis exercises to contribute significantly to improved profit planning skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on break-even analysis exercises, profit planning skills, accounting education, management accounting education, cost-volume-profit analysis, experiential learning, constructivist learning, cognitive learning, practical costing skills, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening management accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical break-even analysis exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic cost-volume-profit case studies and simulations, strengthening students' understanding of fixed and variable costs, contribution, break-even points, margin of safety, and target profit, incorporating spreadsheet and computerized analysis tools into instruction, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, developing competency-based profit-planning assessments, and aligning management accounting instruction with the practical profit-planning competencies required in contemporary business environments in Nigeria.
