Effect of Break-Even Analysis Knowledge on Students’ Business Decision-Making Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

This study examined the effect of break-even analysis knowledge on students’ business decision-making skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Break-even analysis knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the relationship among fixed costs, variable costs, selling price, sales volume and profit, as well as their ability to determine the level of business activity at which total revenue equals total cost. Business decision-making skills refer to students’ ability to examine available financial information, evaluate alternative courses of action, identify possible outcomes and select appropriate decisions for achieving business objectives. The study was motivated by the importance of break-even analysis as a management accounting technique and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical skills that enable them to apply accounting information in business situations. Students who possess adequate knowledge of break-even analysis may be better able to determine the sales level required to avoid losses, evaluate the financial implications of business alternatives and make informed decisions relating to pricing, production and sales. The study therefore investigated whether break-even analysis knowledge has a significant effect on students’ business decision-making skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Break-even analysis provides useful information for understanding the relationship between business costs, revenue and profit. Knowledge of concepts such as fixed costs, variable costs, contribution, break-even point and margin of safety can help students assess the financial consequences of different business decisions. Understanding the break-even point can enable students to determine the minimum level of sales required to cover total costs, while knowledge of the margin of safety can help them assess the extent to which sales can decline before losses occur. These concepts can provide students with a practical basis for evaluating business operations and considering whether proposed decisions are financially reasonable. For Accounting Education students, competence in break-even analysis is particularly relevant because it links management accounting knowledge with practical business planning, cost control and decision-making. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ break-even analysis knowledge and business decision-making skills. Break-even analysis knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of fixed costs, variable costs, contribution, break-even point, margin of safety, sales volume and profit relationships. Business decision-making skills were considered in terms of students’ ability to evaluate business alternatives, assess pricing decisions, determine appropriate production levels, analyze cost implications, evaluate expected outcomes and select suitable courses of action. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that break-even analysis knowledge has a significant effect on students’ business decision-making skills. Students with adequate knowledge of break-even analysis may be better able to understand how changes in costs, selling prices and sales volume influence business profitability. Knowledge of the break-even point can help students determine the minimum sales volume necessary to cover business costs, while contribution analysis can assist them in understanding how sales contribute toward fixed costs and profit. Students may also be better prepared to evaluate the possible consequences of increasing or reducing selling prices, changing production levels or adjusting cost structures. These competencies can provide a stronger financial basis for making appropriate business decisions. Furthermore, practical exposure to break-even analysis can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Classroom exercises involving financial data, break-even calculations, business cases and decision-making scenarios can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic situations. Students can be required to determine break-even sales levels, assess the effect of changes in costs or selling prices and recommend appropriate business actions based on their findings. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing formulas and develop the ability to interpret results, explain their implications and use accounting information to support business decisions. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics. Students can benefit from developing practical break-even analysis skills that enable them to understand the financial implications of different business decisions. Lecturers should provide regular exercises involving break-even calculations, contribution analysis, margin of safety and business decision-making cases. Accounting departments should also integrate practical break-even analysis into relevant management accounting courses and assessments. This can help students connect classroom learning with real-world business situations and improve their ability to use financial information in making informed judgments. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction on break-even analysis with practical exercises, case studies and business simulations. Students should be encouraged to understand not only how to calculate the break-even point but also how to interpret the results and apply them to business decisions. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical opportunities for students to evaluate pricing, production, sales and cost-related decisions. In conclusion, strengthening break-even analysis knowledge can improve students’ business decision-making skills and contribute to stronger analytical reasoning, financial interpretation, cost analysis, problem-solving ability, management accounting competence and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
