Effect of Career Guidance in Accounting Education on Students’ Career Decision-Making Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Career guidance in accounting education involves providing students with relevant information, counselling, advice, and support to help them understand accounting career options and make appropriate career choices. Career decision-making skills refer to students’ ability to identify suitable career alternatives, evaluate available options, assess their interests and abilities, and make informed decisions about their future careers. Some accounting students may experience difficulty choosing appropriate career paths because of inadequate information about career opportunities, professional requirements, and personal capabilities. This study therefore examines the effect of career guidance in accounting education on students’ career decision-making skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is intended to determine whether effective career guidance contributes to improved career decision-making among accounting students. Career guidance in accounting education may include career counselling, information about accounting professions, discussions on professional qualifications, exposure to different accounting career paths, and advice on employment and further educational opportunities. Through these activities, students can gain a clearer understanding of the responsibilities associated with different accounting occupations and the qualifications and competencies required for them. Career guidance can also help students assess their interests, strengths, abilities, and career expectations in relation to available opportunities. Regular access to appropriate career information and guidance may therefore help students approach career choices more systematically. Career decision-making skills are important to accounting students because the accounting profession provides diverse career opportunities in areas such as auditing, taxation, financial reporting, management accounting, public sector accounting, banking, consulting, and related fields. Students with effective career decision-making skills may be better able to compare career alternatives, identify suitable professional pathways, establish career goals, and make informed choices about their education and professional development. Career guidance may strengthen these skills by providing students with accurate career information, professional advice, and opportunities to discuss their career concerns. The study will therefore assess the extent to which career guidance influences students’ ability to make appropriate career decisions. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will consist of accounting students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure the extent of students’ exposure to career guidance in accounting education and their career decision-making skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while reliability will be established using a suitable reliability technique. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the effect of career guidance on students’ career decision-making skills. The study is expected to establish that career guidance in accounting education has a positive effect on students’ career decision-making skills. Students who receive adequate career guidance are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify suitable accounting career options, evaluate alternatives, set realistic career goals, and make informed career choices. The study may also establish that access to career information and professional counselling helps students develop a clearer understanding of the relationship between their academic preparation, personal capabilities, and future career opportunities. These expected findings would demonstrate the value of integrating career guidance more effectively into accounting education. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of accounting in polytechnics. Accounting lecturers and career guidance personnel could incorporate career-related discussions, professional information, and career planning activities into accounting education. Such activities could help students connect accounting knowledge acquired in the classroom with specific career pathways and professional expectations. Career guidance may also encourage students to identify areas where additional knowledge or skills are required and make appropriate plans for professional development before graduation. The study will be significant to accounting students, lecturers, polytechnic administrators, career counsellors, professional accounting organizations, and employers. Students may benefit from improved ability to evaluate career alternatives and make informed professional choices. Lecturers and career counsellors may gain greater understanding of the importance of providing structured career support to accounting students. Polytechnic administrators may use the findings to strengthen career guidance services, while professional accounting organizations and employers may benefit from graduates who possess clearer career goals and better understanding of professional expectations. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen career guidance services within accounting education by providing regular career counselling, professional talks, career information sessions, and opportunities for students to interact with practising accounting professionals. Career guidance should be provided throughout students’ academic programmes rather than being limited to the period immediately before graduation. Accounting departments should also collaborate with career development units and relevant professional organizations to provide students with current and practical career information. The study concludes that effective career guidance can contribute meaningfully to the development of students’ career decision-making skills and should form an important part of accounting education in Nigerian polytechnics.
