Effect of Conceptual Framework-Based Teaching on Students’ Ability to Apply Fundamental Accounting Concepts in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Conceptual framework-based teaching is an instructional approach that organizes accounting lessons around fundamental concepts and relationships that explain the recognition, measurement, presentation, and interpretation of accounting information, while students’ ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts refers to their capacity to use accounting principles correctly when analyzing and recording business transactions. A sound understanding of fundamental accounting concepts is essential because it provides the foundation for learning more advanced accounting topics and performing practical accounting tasks. However, some accounting students experience difficulties applying concepts to accounting situations when instruction focuses mainly on memorization and procedural exercises. This study therefore examines the effect of conceptual framework-based teaching on students’ ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts in Nigerian universities. Conceptual framework-based teaching emphasizes the explanation of accounting concepts, their underlying principles, and the relationships among different accounting elements before students are required to apply them to practical situations. The approach may involve concept explanation, classification activities, examples of business transactions, guided discussions, problem-solving exercises, and practical applications of accounting principles. By emphasizing why accounting treatments are appropriate rather than focusing only on procedures, the approach can help students develop a deeper understanding of accounting concepts and improve their ability to transfer knowledge to unfamiliar accounting situations. Students’ ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts involves their capacity to use concepts such as the accounting entity, going concern, accrual, consistency, prudence, and matching appropriately when dealing with accounting problems and business transactions. Effective application requires more than recalling definitions because students must recognize relevant accounting concepts and use them to determine appropriate accounting treatments. Conceptual framework-based teaching is expected to strengthen this ability by helping students understand the meaning, purpose, and practical application of fundamental accounting concepts. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the effect of conceptual framework-based teaching on students’ ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a structured accounting achievement test designed to measure students’ ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts to practical accounting situations. The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of the instructional approach. The study is expected to establish that students exposed to conceptual framework-based teaching demonstrate greater ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts than students taught through conventional instructional methods. The approach is expected to improve students’ understanding of accounting principles, their ability to recognize the appropriate concepts underlying accounting situations, and their capacity to apply those concepts when solving accounting problems. The study may also indicate that concept-focused instruction helps students move beyond memorization toward deeper and more meaningful understanding of accounting principles. The findings will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers can incorporate conceptual explanations, practical examples, guided discussions, and application-based exercises into their lessons to help students understand the relationships among fundamental accounting concepts. Rather than presenting accounting rules as isolated facts, lecturers can demonstrate how individual concepts influence accounting treatment in different business situations. This may encourage students to develop stronger conceptual reasoning and improve their ability to apply accounting knowledge in practical contexts. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, university lecturers, curriculum planners, accounting education departments, and professional accounting educators. Students may benefit from improved conceptual understanding and greater competence in applying accounting principles, while lecturers may gain an instructional approach that supports deeper learning of fundamental accounting concepts. Curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen concept-based and application-oriented activities within accounting education programmes. The approach may contribute to better preparation of students for advanced accounting courses and professional accounting practice. The study recommends that accounting education programmes in Nigerian universities should encourage the use of conceptual framework-based teaching when presenting fundamental accounting concepts. Lecturers should combine conceptual explanations with practical examples, transaction-based exercises, classroom discussions, and application tasks that require students to use accounting concepts in different situations. Students should also be encouraged to understand the reasoning behind accounting treatments rather than relying solely on memorization. It is concluded that conceptual framework-based teaching can provide an effective approach for improving students’ ability to apply fundamental accounting concepts and strengthening the quality of accounting education.
