Effect of Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis Exercises on Students’ Profitability Analysis Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analysis is an important component of management accounting education because it enables students to understand the relationship between costs, sales volume, selling price, contribution, and profitability. Accounting education students require practical competence in applying CVP techniques to evaluate how changes in business activities influence profit and to support managerial planning and decision-making. However, students may experience difficulties applying CVP concepts when instruction focuses mainly on theoretical explanations and routine calculations without sufficient opportunities to analyse realistic business situations. Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to calculate contribution margins, break-even points, margin of safety, target profit, operating leverage, and profit-volume relationships while examining the effects of changes in sales volume, selling prices, variable costs, and fixed costs. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of cost-volume-profit analysis exercises on students' profitability analysis skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical CVP analysis exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes how learners acquire, organize, process, retain, and apply information, providing a suitable framework for understanding how students process cost, volume, revenue, and profit relationships. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how CVP analysis exercises may influence students' profitability analysis skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. CVP analysis exercises will be assessed using indicators such as contribution margin analysis, contribution-to-sales ratio, break-even point in units, break-even point in sales value, margin of safety, target profit analysis, required sales for desired profit, profit-volume analysis, cost behaviour analysis, fixed and variable cost classification, operating leverage analysis, sales-volume analysis, selling-price analysis, variable-cost analysis, fixed-cost analysis, sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis, graphical CVP analysis, multi-product CVP analysis, realistic business cases, profitability simulations, spreadsheet-based CVP exercises, group problem-solving, individual activities, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' profitability analysis skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to calculate contribution margins, analyse cost behaviour, determine break-even points, calculate and interpret margin of safety, estimate target profit, forecast profit at different sales volumes, evaluate changes in selling prices and costs, analyse operating leverage, interpret profit-volume relationships, compare profitability under alternative scenarios, identify factors affecting profit, evaluate multi-product profitability, interpret CVP graphs, assess profitability risks, make evidence-based profitability judgments, communicate analytical findings, recommend appropriate profitability strategies, and apply CVP principles to unfamiliar business situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized CVP analysis tests, practical profitability analysis tasks, management accounting case studies, business scenarios, profitability simulations, spreadsheet-based exercises, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to CVP analysis exercises, practical management accounting experiences, and levels of profitability analysis skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of CVP analysis exercises on students' profitability analysis skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, profitability analysis skill scores before and after exposure to CVP analysis exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional management accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cost-volume-profit analysis exercises have a significant positive effect on students' profitability analysis skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical CVP exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to analyse cost behaviour, calculate contribution, determine break-even points, evaluate margin of safety, forecast profitability, assess operating leverage, and interpret changes in profit than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical exercises may help students understand how changes in sales volume, selling prices, variable costs, and fixed costs affect contribution and profitability. Target-profit exercises may strengthen students' ability to determine the sales volume required to achieve specific profit objectives, while margin-of-safety analysis may improve their understanding of the level of sales decline a business can withstand before incurring losses. Operating leverage exercises may help students evaluate the relationship between fixed costs and changes in operating profit. Multi-product CVP exercises may further strengthen students' ability to evaluate profitability when organizations offer different products with varying contribution margins. Sensitivity and scenario analysis may improve students' ability to evaluate how changes in key assumptions affect profitability outcomes. Spreadsheet-based CVP exercises and simulations may improve students' ability to organize financial information, perform calculations accurately, evaluate alternative assumptions, and present profitability analysis efficiently. However, complex CVP calculations, inadequate access to spreadsheet and accounting software, limited exposure to realistic business data, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty interpreting CVP relationships may reduce the effectiveness of the exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised CVP analysis exercises to contribute significantly to improved profitability analysis skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cost-volume-profit analysis exercises, profitability analysis skills, accounting education, management accounting education, contribution analysis, break-even analysis, operating leverage, experiential learning, constructivist learning, cognitive learning, practical accounting skills, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical management accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical CVP analysis exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic profitability analysis cases and simulations, strengthening students' understanding of contribution, break-even points, margin of safety, target profit, and operating leverage, incorporating spreadsheet-based CVP analysis tools into instruction, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, training accounting educators in practical CVP analysis methods, developing competency-based profitability analysis assessments, and aligning management accounting education with the practical profitability analysis competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
