Effect of Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis Knowledge on Students’ Profit Planning Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the effect of cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge on students’ profit planning skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the relationship between cost, sales volume and profit and their ability to apply this relationship in analyzing business operations. Profit planning skills involve the ability to estimate expected sales, costs and profits, determine appropriate sales targets and develop plans for achieving desired profit levels. The study was motivated by the importance of cost-volume-profit analysis in business planning and the need for accounting students to develop practical skills for making informed profit-related decisions. Students who possess adequate knowledge of cost-volume-profit analysis may be better able to understand how changes in sales volume, selling price and costs influence business profitability. The study therefore investigated whether cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge has a significant effect on students’ profit planning skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Cost-volume-profit analysis provides useful information for understanding the financial relationship between business costs, sales activity and profit. Knowledge of concepts such as fixed costs, variable costs, contribution margin, break-even point and margin of safety can help students assess the level of business activity required to achieve desired financial outcomes. Students who understand these concepts may be better prepared to estimate the effects of changes in sales volume or cost structure on profitability. This knowledge can also help them evaluate alternative business plans and determine whether proposed sales targets are sufficient to cover costs and generate the expected profit. For Accounting Education students, developing this competence is important because it connects management accounting principles with practical business planning and decision-making. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge and profit planning skills. Cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of fixed costs, variable costs, contribution margin, break-even analysis, margin of safety and the relationship between sales volume and profit. Profit planning skills were considered in terms of students’ ability to set profit targets, estimate sales requirements, determine expected costs, analyze alternative plans and develop appropriate strategies for achieving desired profit levels. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge has a significant effect on students’ profit planning skills. Students with adequate knowledge of cost-volume-profit concepts may be better able to determine the sales volume required to cover business costs and achieve a particular profit target. Understanding contribution margin can help students assess how sales contribute toward covering fixed costs and generating profit, while break-even analysis can help them identify the minimum level of activity required before a business begins to earn profit. Knowledge of margin of safety can also help students assess the extent to which sales can decline before a business reaches its break-even point. These competencies can provide students with a stronger basis for developing realistic and financially informed profit plans. Furthermore, practical exposure to cost-volume-profit analysis can strengthen students’ analytical and decision-making abilities. Classroom exercises involving business scenarios, financial data and profit planning problems can enable students to examine the effects of changes in selling prices, sales volume and costs on expected profit. Students can also be encouraged to compare different alternatives and determine which option is more likely to achieve a desired profit objective. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing formulas and develop the ability to interpret results and apply cost-volume-profit information to practical business situations. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics. Lecturers should provide regular practical exercises involving break-even analysis, contribution analysis, margin of safety and profit target calculations. Students should also be exposed to realistic business cases that require them to apply cost-volume-profit knowledge when developing profit plans and evaluating business alternatives. Accounting departments should integrate practical profit planning activities into management accounting courses and assessments to strengthen students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical teaching of cost-volume-profit analysis with practical problem-solving activities and business simulations. Students should be encouraged to develop strong knowledge of cost behavior, contribution margin, break-even point and other relevant concepts and apply them to profit planning situations. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and opportunities for students to practice analyzing financial information and developing profit plans. In conclusion, strengthening cost-volume-profit analysis knowledge can improve students’ profit planning skills and contribute to stronger analytical reasoning, financial decision-making, management accounting competence and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
