Effect of Data Visualization Activities on Students’ Interpretation of Financial Data in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Financial data interpretation is an essential competency in accounting education because accounting professionals are expected to understand, analyze, and communicate financial information for effective decision-making. The increasing availability of large volumes of financial information in digital formats has created a greater need for students to develop the ability to transform complex financial data into clear and meaningful visual representations. Data visualization activities provide students with opportunities to use charts, graphs, dashboards, tables, and other visual tools to organize and interpret financial information. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited exposure to practical data visualization activities, which may affect their ability to identify trends, compare financial information, recognize patterns, and draw appropriate conclusions from financial data. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Data Visualization Activities on students’ interpretation of financial data in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning explains how the appropriate combination of visual and verbal representations can support students’ understanding and processing of complex information. Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of developing relevant knowledge and practical skills that improve students’ productivity, employability, and professional competence. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Data Visualization Activities may influence students’ interpretation of financial data. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial-data interpretation assessment instruments, data visualization practical tasks, performance rubrics, observation checklists, case-based financial-data exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial-data interpretation scores before and after participation in the visualization activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Data Visualization Activities have a significant positive effect on students’ interpretation of financial data in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and practical data visualization activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to organize, analyze, compare, interpret, and communicate financial information. Financial-data table activities may strengthen students’ ability to extract relevant information from numerical records. Bar- and column-chart activities may improve students’ ability to compare financial categories. Line-graph activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify changes and trends over time. Pie-chart activities may improve students’ understanding of proportions and financial composition. Scatter-plot activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify relationships between financial variables. Histogram activities may improve students’ understanding of financial-data distributions. Dashboard activities may strengthen students’ ability to interpret multiple financial indicators simultaneously. Trend-chart activities may improve students’ ability to identify changes in revenue, expenditure, profit, and other financial measures. Variance-chart activities may strengthen students’ ability to interpret differences between planned and actual financial outcomes. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Data Visualization Activities to contribute significantly to improved interpretation of financial data among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities.
