Effect of Financial Accounting Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Prepare Final Accounts in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the effect of financial accounting knowledge on students’ ability to prepare final accounts in Nigerian polytechnics. Financial accounting knowledge refers to students’ understanding of accounting principles, concepts and procedures used to record, classify, summarize and report financial transactions. The ability to prepare final accounts refers to students’ capacity to use accounting information to prepare the trading account, income statement and statement of financial position accurately. The study was motivated by the importance of final accounts in communicating the financial performance and position of a business and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical accounting competencies. Students with adequate financial accounting knowledge may be better equipped to process accounting information, apply accounting principles and prepare final accounts correctly. The study therefore investigated whether financial accounting knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to prepare final accounts in Nigerian polytechnics. Final accounts provide important information about the financial activities and position of a business at the end of an accounting period. Knowledge of accounting concepts, double-entry principles, adjustments, depreciation, accruals, prepayments, inventory and financial statement preparation can help students understand the procedures involved in preparing final accounts. Students who possess adequate knowledge of these areas may be better able to identify relevant accounting information, make necessary adjustments and present financial information in the appropriate format. This knowledge is particularly important for Accounting Education students because the preparation of final accounts is a fundamental accounting skill that supports further learning in financial reporting, auditing and financial analysis. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ financial accounting knowledge and their ability to prepare final accounts. Financial accounting knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of accounting principles, double-entry procedures, accounting adjustments, depreciation, inventory, accruals and prepayments. Students’ ability to prepare final accounts was considered in terms of their capacity to classify accounting information, make appropriate adjustments, calculate profit or loss and prepare statements showing the financial position of a business. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that financial accounting knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to prepare final accounts. Students with adequate knowledge of financial accounting may be better able to understand the relationship between accounting transactions and the financial statements prepared at the end of an accounting period. Knowledge of accounting adjustments can help students correctly treat items such as depreciation, accrued expenses, prepaid expenses and closing inventory. Students may also be better prepared to calculate gross and net profit and present assets, liabilities and capital appropriately in the statement of financial position. These competencies can provide students with a stronger foundation for preparing accurate and reliable final accounts. Furthermore, practical exposure to final account preparation can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Classroom exercises involving trial balances, accounting adjustments, financial statement preparation and realistic business transactions can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Students can be required to identify accounting errors, make necessary adjustments and prepare complete final accounts from given information. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing accounting procedures and develop the ability to apply financial accounting principles accurately. Regular practice can also improve their confidence in handling accounting information and identifying errors in financial statements. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics. Students can benefit from developing strong financial accounting knowledge that enables them to prepare and interpret final accounts effectively. Lecturers should provide regular practical exercises involving trial balances, adjustments, trading accounts, income statements and statements of financial position. Accounting departments should also integrate practical final account preparation into relevant financial accounting courses. Business-based accounting exercises can expose students to realistic transactions and help them understand how financial information is transformed into useful financial statements. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction in financial accounting with practical exercises, case studies and repeated final account preparation activities. Students should be encouraged to develop a clear understanding of accounting principles, adjustments, depreciation, inventory and financial statement preparation and apply these concepts when preparing final accounts. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical opportunities for students to work with realistic accounting information. In conclusion, strengthening financial accounting knowledge can improve students’ ability to prepare final accounts and contribute to stronger accounting accuracy, financial reporting skills, analytical reasoning, problem-solving ability, financial interpretation, decision-making competence, accounting knowledge and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
