Effect of Financial Numeracy on the Accounting Competence of Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Institutions
Abstract
Financial numeracy is an important ability that enables individuals to understand, interpret, and work accurately with numerical information relating to money and financial activities. In accounting education, financial numeracy is particularly important because students are expected to perform calculations, interpret financial figures, analyze numerical information, and apply quantitative concepts to accounting problems. Accounting competence refers to students’ ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, accuracy, and practical understanding required to perform accounting tasks effectively. However, inadequate numerical ability may make it difficult for some students to accurately apply accounting principles and perform financial calculations. This study therefore examines the effect of financial numeracy on the accounting competence of accounting education students in Nigerian institutions. Financial numeracy involves the ability to understand numerical relationships, perform basic and financial calculations, interpret percentages and ratios, work with monetary values, and make appropriate conclusions from quantitative information. Within accounting education, students apply these abilities when calculating profits, preparing financial statements, analyzing costs, determining financial ratios, and interpreting accounting information. Strong financial numeracy can enable students to handle numerical accounting tasks with greater accuracy and confidence. Developing this ability through appropriate classroom exercises and practical accounting activities may therefore contribute to students’ overall competence in accounting. Accounting competence encompasses students’ ability to understand accounting concepts, apply accounting principles, perform accounting procedures, solve accounting problems, and accurately prepare and interpret accounting information. Financial numeracy can contribute to this competence because many accounting activities require students to manipulate figures, recognize numerical relationships, perform calculations, and interpret financial results. Students with adequate financial numeracy are expected to be better positioned to apply accounting knowledge accurately in both academic exercises and practical accounting situations. Consequently, strengthening financial numeracy may provide an important foundation for developing students’ accounting competence. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Data will be collected using a structured financial numeracy assessment and an accounting competence assessment designed to measure students’ numerical abilities and accounting skills respectively. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data obtained from the respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique at a 0.05 level of significance to determine the effect of financial numeracy on students’ accounting competence. The study is expected to establish that financial numeracy has a significant positive effect on the accounting competence of accounting education students. Students who demonstrate stronger financial numeracy are expected to perform better in accounting tasks involving calculations, interpretation of financial figures, quantitative analysis, and application of accounting principles. The findings may also identify areas of numerical difficulty that affect students’ ability to demonstrate accounting competence effectively. The expected findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education. Accounting lecturers may need to integrate more financial numeracy activities into accounting courses through numerical exercises, practical calculations, financial data interpretation, and problem-solving activities. Students should be given regular opportunities to work with realistic financial figures and apply numerical concepts to accounting situations. This approach can help bridge the gap between numerical knowledge and practical accounting application. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may improve their numerical and accounting abilities, while lecturers may gain useful insights into the importance of developing financial numeracy during accounting instruction. Tertiary institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen quantitative components of accounting education programmes. Professional bodies and employers may also benefit from accounting graduates who possess stronger numerical and practical accounting competence. The study recommends that accounting education programmes should give greater attention to the development of students’ financial numeracy through regular numerical exercises, financial calculations, ratio analysis, accounting problem-solving tasks, and practical interpretation of financial data. Lecturers should provide learning activities that connect numerical concepts directly to accounting applications. Institutions should also encourage instructional approaches that allow students to repeatedly practice and apply financial numeracy skills. The study concludes that improving financial numeracy can contribute significantly to the development of accounting competence among accounting education students.
