Effect of Financial Reporting Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Identify Relevant Accounting Disclosures in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the effect of financial reporting knowledge on students’ ability to identify relevant accounting disclosures in Nigerian polytechnics. Financial reporting knowledge refers to students’ understanding of accounting principles, reporting requirements, disclosure practices, and the information presented in financial statements. The ability to identify relevant accounting disclosures relates to students’ capacity to recognize financial and non-financial information that is important for understanding an organization’s financial position, performance, and operations. The study was motivated by the importance of accounting disclosures in promoting transparency and supporting informed decisions by users of financial statements. The study therefore investigated whether adequate financial reporting knowledge improves students’ ability to identify relevant accounting disclosures. Accounting disclosures provide additional information that helps users properly interpret financial statements and understand the circumstances surrounding reported accounting figures. Such disclosures may include accounting policies, contingent liabilities, related-party transactions, commitments, and other significant financial information. Students with adequate financial reporting knowledge are expected to better understand the purpose of these disclosures and distinguish relevant information from less significant details. However, inadequate knowledge may make it difficult for students to determine which disclosures are important when analyzing financial reports. Developing this ability is therefore important for students preparing for careers in accounting, auditing, financial analysis, and related professional fields. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to assess students’ financial reporting knowledge and their ability to identify relevant accounting disclosures. The instrument was validated by experts in accounting and financial reporting education, while appropriate reliability procedures were conducted to establish its consistency. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that financial reporting knowledge has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to identify relevant accounting disclosures. Students with stronger knowledge of financial reporting principles are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize disclosures that provide useful information about an organization’s financial activities and position. Such knowledge may also improve their ability to interpret financial statements and understand the importance of supplementary information accompanying reported figures. Conversely, limited financial reporting knowledge may result in students overlooking important disclosures or experiencing difficulty in determining their relevance when evaluating financial reports. The study also emphasizes the importance of practical approaches to teaching financial reporting in Nigerian polytechnics. Lecturers can improve students’ understanding through the use of actual or simplified financial statements, disclosure analysis exercises, case studies, and practical classroom assignments. Students should be encouraged to examine notes to financial statements and identify the purpose and relevance of different disclosures. These learning activities can help students connect theoretical financial reporting concepts with practical financial statement analysis and develop greater confidence in interpreting accounting information. The findings of the study are expected to be useful to accounting students, lecturers, accounting departments, curriculum developers, and professional accounting organizations. For students, improved financial reporting knowledge can strengthen their ability to interpret financial statements and recognize information that is important to users of accounting reports. Lecturers may use the findings to identify areas where students experience difficulties with accounting disclosures and improve their instructional approaches. Curriculum developers may also strengthen financial reporting courses by incorporating more practical disclosure analysis and financial statement interpretation activities. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen financial reporting education through practical exercises, financial statement analysis, disclosure-based case studies, and regular assessments. Lecturers should provide students with sufficient opportunities to identify and interpret different types of accounting disclosures and explain their relevance to financial statement users. Students should also engage in independent study and practical analysis of financial reports to strengthen their understanding. Overall, the study concludes that adequate financial reporting knowledge is important for improving students’ ability to identify relevant accounting disclosures and developing their competence in financial statement analysis.
