Effect of Financial Statement Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Assess Business Performance in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the effect of financial statement knowledge on students’ ability to assess business performance in Nigerian polytechnics. Financial statement knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the purpose, structure, components and interpretation of financial statements, while the ability to assess business performance involves students’ capacity to examine financial information and determine the profitability, efficiency, liquidity and financial position of a business. The study was motivated by the observation that some accounting students may understand how financial statements are prepared but experience difficulties when required to use the information presented in them to evaluate business performance. Adequate knowledge of financial statements may enable students to understand the meaning of financial figures, identify significant changes and draw appropriate conclusions about the financial condition of a business. The study therefore investigated whether financial statement knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to assess business performance in Nigerian polytechnics. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ financial statement knowledge and their ability to assess business performance. Financial statement knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of the statement of financial position, statement of profit or loss, statement of cash flows, accounting terminology and relationships among financial statement items. Students’ ability to assess business performance was considered in terms of their capacity to evaluate profitability, liquidity, financial position, financial trends and changes in business results. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that financial statement knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to assess business performance. Students with adequate knowledge of financial statements may be better able to understand the relationship between revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, equity and cash flows and use this information to evaluate different aspects of business performance. Knowledge of financial statement structure can also help students identify important financial information, compare results across accounting periods and recognize changes that may indicate improvement or decline in business performance. Furthermore, understanding financial statements can enable students to move beyond simply reading financial figures and develop the ability to interpret their implications for profitability, liquidity and financial position. The study further recognizes the importance of practical exposure to financial statements in developing students’ assessment skills. Classroom activities involving actual or realistic financial statements, financial statement analysis, business cases and interpretation exercises can provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge to practical situations. Such activities can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning and help them understand how financial information can be used to evaluate business performance. Regular practice may also improve students’ confidence in interpreting financial reports and making evidence-based conclusions. The findings will be useful to accounting students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics. Lecturers should provide regular exercises that require students to read, interpret and analyze financial statements and use the information to assess business performance. Accounting departments should also integrate practical financial statement analysis into relevant accounting courses and assessments. Students should be encouraged to develop both theoretical and practical knowledge of financial statements rather than relying solely on memorization. The study concludes that strengthening financial statement knowledge can improve students’ ability to assess business performance and contribute to better analytical skills, financial interpretation, decision-making ability, accounting competence and professional preparedness.
