Effect of Forensic Accounting Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Identify Financial Irregularities in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
This study examined the effect of forensic accounting knowledge on students’ ability to identify financial irregularities in Nigerian universities. Forensic accounting knowledge refers to students’ understanding of accounting techniques, investigative procedures and analytical methods used to examine financial records, detect unusual transactions and identify possible financial misconduct. The ability to identify financial irregularities involves students’ capacity to examine financial information, recognize inconsistencies, detect suspicious transactions and determine possible signs of fraud or other financial misconduct. The study was motivated by the increasing importance of financial accountability, transparency and fraud detection and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical skills for identifying irregularities in financial information. Students with adequate knowledge of forensic accounting may be better equipped to analyze financial records and recognize unusual patterns that may indicate financial irregularities. The study therefore investigated whether forensic accounting knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to identify financial irregularities in Nigerian universities. Forensic accounting combines accounting knowledge with investigative and analytical techniques to examine financial information and uncover possible irregularities. Knowledge of fraud indicators, financial statement analysis, transaction examination, documentation and investigative procedures can help students understand how financial irregularities may occur and how they can be identified. Students who understand these concepts may be better able to examine accounting records, compare financial information and recognize unusual transactions or inconsistencies. This knowledge is particularly important for Accounting Education students because it connects accounting principles with practical financial investigation, fraud detection and accountability. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ forensic accounting knowledge and their ability to identify financial irregularities. Forensic accounting knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of fraud indicators, financial statement analysis, transaction examination, internal control weaknesses, documentation and investigative accounting techniques. Students’ ability to identify financial irregularities was considered in terms of their capacity to detect unusual transactions, recognize inconsistencies in financial records, identify suspicious financial activities and interpret information that may indicate possible irregularities. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that forensic accounting knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to identify financial irregularities. Students with adequate knowledge of forensic accounting may be better able to recognize financial information that requires further examination. Knowledge of fraud indicators can help students identify warning signs associated with suspicious activities, while financial statement analysis can enable them to detect unusual changes, inconsistencies and unexpected relationships in financial information. Students may also be better prepared to examine transaction records and supporting documentation when assessing the reliability of accounting information. These competencies can provide students with a stronger basis for identifying possible financial irregularities and making informed judgments about financial records. Furthermore, practical exposure to forensic accounting can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Classroom exercises involving financial records, transaction analysis, fraud scenarios and realistic accounting cases can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Students can be required to examine financial information, identify unusual transactions and explain the possible reasons for inconsistencies. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing forensic accounting concepts and develop the ability to critically examine financial information. Regular practical exercises can also improve students’ confidence in identifying warning signs and evaluating the reliability of financial records. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian universities. Students can benefit from developing practical forensic accounting knowledge that enables them to identify possible financial irregularities and understand the importance of financial accountability. Lecturers should provide regular exercises involving fraud indicators, financial statement analysis, transaction examination and investigative procedures. Accounting departments should also integrate practical forensic accounting activities into relevant accounting, auditing and financial reporting courses. Case studies involving financial irregularities can expose students to realistic situations and strengthen their ability to apply accounting knowledge to financial investigation. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction on forensic accounting with practical exercises, case studies and financial investigation activities. Students should be encouraged to develop a clear understanding of fraud indicators, transaction analysis, financial statement analysis and investigative accounting techniques and apply these concepts when examining financial information. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical opportunities for students to analyze realistic financial records. In conclusion, strengthening forensic accounting knowledge can improve students’ ability to identify financial irregularities and contribute to stronger fraud detection skills, financial analysis, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem-solving ability, accountability awareness, accounting competence and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities.
