Effect of Industry Guest Lectures on Students’ Understanding of Contemporary Accounting Practice in Nigeria

Abstract

The accounting profession is undergoing significant changes as a result of technological advancement, evolving financial reporting requirements, digital transformation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, sustainability reporting, and changing business practices. These developments have increased the need for accounting education students to understand how accounting knowledge is applied within contemporary professional environments. Traditional classroom instruction may provide students with foundational theoretical knowledge but may offer limited opportunities to interact directly with practicing accountants and other industry professionals. Industry guest lectures provide an avenue for accounting practitioners to share current professional experiences, workplace practices, technological developments, ethical challenges, regulatory changes, and emerging trends with students. Such interactions may help students connect academic concepts with real-world accounting practice and improve their understanding of contemporary developments in the profession. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of industry guest lectures on students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Learning Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active application, providing a suitable basis for examining how industry guest lectures may connect classroom knowledge with professional experience. Social Learning Theory emphasizes learning through observation, interaction, modelling, and social engagement, making it relevant to students' learning from practicing accounting professionals and their workplace experiences. Human Capital Theory explains how exposure to relevant professional knowledge and experiences can improve students' competencies, employability, productivity, and future professional performance. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how industry guest lectures may influence students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected universities and other higher institutions offering accounting education programmes across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Industry guest lectures will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of guest lectures, duration of sessions, professional experience of guest speakers, relevance of lecture topics, practical examples, discussion of current accounting practices, exposure to accounting technologies, financial reporting developments, auditing practices, taxation, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cybersecurity, sustainability reporting, professional ethics, regulatory changes, career guidance, question-and-answer sessions, interactive discussions, case presentations, and opportunities for student engagement with industry professionals. Students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of current accounting technologies, digital accounting systems, financial reporting developments, auditing practices, taxation changes, data analytics, artificial intelligence applications, cybersecurity issues, sustainability reporting, professional ethics, regulatory requirements, workplace procedures, emerging accounting roles, and ability to apply contemporary accounting knowledge to practical professional situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized contemporary accounting practice knowledge tests, scenario-based questions, case studies, guest-lecture participation records where available, practical accounting exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to industry guest lectures, sources of professional information, and levels of understanding of contemporary accounting practice. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of industry guest lectures on students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' knowledge scores before and after exposure to industry guest lectures may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that industry guest lectures have a significant positive effect on students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice in Nigeria. Students exposed to regular, relevant, and professionally delivered guest lectures are expected to demonstrate stronger knowledge of current accounting technologies, financial reporting developments, auditing practices, taxation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, sustainability reporting, professional ethics, and regulatory requirements than students without comparable industry exposure. Direct interaction with practicing professionals may help students understand how accounting principles are applied in real organizations and how technological and regulatory changes are affecting contemporary accounting practice. Industry professionals may also provide practical examples, case experiences, and career insights that help students appreciate emerging accounting roles and workplace expectations. However, irregular guest-lecture programmes, limited participation by experienced professionals, weak university-industry relationships, inadequate funding, scheduling challenges, and insufficient opportunities for student interaction may reduce the effectiveness of the intervention. The study therefore expects regular, relevant, interactive, and professionally guided industry guest lectures to contribute significantly to improved understanding of contemporary accounting practice among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on industry guest lectures, contemporary accounting practice, accounting education, experiential learning, professional accounting education, industry-academic collaboration, accounting technology, financial reporting education, auditing education, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of education and management sciences, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, industry professionals, curriculum developers, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening the connection between accounting education and professional practice. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for institutionalizing industry guest-lecture programmes, establishing stronger partnerships between accounting departments and professional organizations, inviting practitioners with current industry expertise, integrating guest lectures into relevant accounting courses, incorporating interactive case discussions and practical demonstrations, providing opportunities for students to engage with accounting professionals, and ensuring that accounting education students remain informed about contemporary developments in the Nigerian accounting profession.
