Effect of Inventory Valuation Exercises on Inventory Management Accounting Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Effective inventory valuation is essential to accurate financial reporting, cost determination, profit measurement, and inventory management. Accounting education students therefore need practical skills in applying inventory valuation methods, analysing inventory records, determining cost of inventories, identifying inventory discrepancies, and evaluating the financial implications of inventory decisions. However, conventional approaches to teaching inventory valuation may emphasize theoretical explanations and routine calculations without providing sufficient opportunities for students to apply valuation methods to realistic inventory-management situations. Inventory Valuation Exercises provide students with structured opportunities to work with inventory records, purchase and sales transactions, stock movements, valuation methods, inventory adjustments, and financial reporting situations. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of inventory valuation exercises on inventory management accounting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Mastery Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' engagement with practical inventory valuation activities. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Mastery Learning Theory emphasizes repeated practice, formative assessment, corrective feedback, and opportunities for learners to achieve clearly defined competencies. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how inventory valuation exercises may influence students' inventory management accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Inventory valuation exercises will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of practical activities, inventory recording, stock movement analysis, inventory purchase and sales transactions, opening and closing inventory, inventory count procedures, First-In-First-Out (FIFO), weighted average cost, specific identification where applicable, inventory costing, inventory adjustments, inventory write-downs, treatment of damaged or obsolete inventory, stock reconciliation, inventory discrepancy analysis, cost of goods sold, gross profit determination, inventory control, spreadsheet-based inventory exercises, accounting software, case studies, simulations, lecturer guidance, feedback, and opportunities for repeated practice. Students' inventory management accounting skills will be assessed using indicators such as accurate inventory recording, application of appropriate valuation methods, calculation of inventory cost, determination of cost of goods sold, calculation of closing inventory, identification of inventory discrepancies, reconciliation of inventory records, treatment of damaged or obsolete stock, analysis of inventory turnover, interpretation of inventory information, evaluation of inventory control procedures, identification of inventory-management problems, application of accounting principles to inventory decisions, preparation of inventory-related accounting entries, and ability to use inventory information for management and financial reporting decisions. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized inventory management accounting skills tests, practical inventory valuation tasks, inventory record exercises, case studies, spreadsheet activities, computerized inventory exercises, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, inventory valuation learning experiences, practical exercise exposure, and levels of inventory management accounting skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of inventory valuation exercises on students' inventory management accounting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, inventory management accounting skill scores before and after exposure to inventory valuation exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional inventory accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that inventory valuation exercises have a significant positive effect on inventory management accounting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students who regularly participate in structured inventory valuation exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to record inventory transactions, apply appropriate valuation methods, determine inventory costs, calculate cost of goods sold, reconcile inventory records, identify discrepancies, and interpret inventory information than students exposed primarily to conventional lecture-based instruction. Practical exercises may enable students to understand how inventory valuation affects reported profit, financial position, cost of sales, and management decisions. Exposure to different inventory scenarios may strengthen students' ability to deal with damaged, obsolete, missing, or incorrectly recorded inventory and improve their understanding of inventory control procedures. Spreadsheet-based and computerized inventory exercises may further strengthen students' digital accounting competence and ability to manage inventory information efficiently. However, inadequate access to inventory-management software, limited practical accounting facilities, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, limited lecturer training, and inadequate exposure to realistic inventory records may reduce the effectiveness of inventory valuation exercises. The study therefore expects structured, practical, progressively challenging, and technology-supported inventory valuation exercises to contribute significantly to improved inventory management accounting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on inventory valuation exercises, inventory management accounting skills, accounting education, inventory accounting, practical accounting competence, experiential learning, constructivist learning, mastery learning, management accounting education, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, employers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical inventory accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for increasing practical inventory valuation exercises in accounting education programmes, developing realistic Nigerian inventory-management cases, incorporating spreadsheet and computerized inventory systems into practical activities, strengthening students' understanding of inventory control and reconciliation, training accounting educators in practical inventory instruction, using competency-based inventory assessment rubrics, providing continuous corrective feedback, and creating opportunities for accounting education students to develop the inventory-management and accounting skills required in contemporary organizations in Nigeria.
