Effect of Islamic Finance Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Accounting Practices in Islamic Financial Institutions in Nigeria
Abstract
Islamic finance accounting education refers to the teaching and learning of accounting principles, concepts, procedures, and reporting practices applicable to Islamic financial transactions and institutions, while students’ knowledge of accounting practices in Islamic financial institutions refers to their understanding of how financial transactions and activities are recognized, measured, recorded, presented, and reported in accordance with relevant Islamic finance principles. The growing development of Islamic financial services has increased the need for accounting graduates who understand the accounting practices applicable to institutions operating within this specialized financial environment. However, limited exposure to Islamic finance accounting concepts may affect students’ knowledge of relevant accounting practices. Therefore, this study examines the effect of Islamic finance accounting education on students’ knowledge of accounting practices in Islamic financial institutions in Nigeria. Islamic finance accounting education introduces students to accounting concepts associated with Shariah-compliant financial transactions and institutions. It covers areas such as Islamic banking transactions, profit-sharing arrangements, Islamic investment activities, asset-backed financing, Islamic financial contracts, income recognition, expense treatment, and financial reporting. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, and analysis of Islamic finance transactions, students can develop an understanding of how accounting principles are applied within Islamic financial institutions. Effective instruction can therefore provide students with the specialized knowledge required to understand accounting activities within the Islamic finance sector. Students’ knowledge of accounting practices in Islamic financial institutions involves their understanding of how transactions and financial activities are recorded, classified, measured, and reported within Islamic financial institutions. It includes knowledge of accounting procedures relating to Islamic financing arrangements, investment activities, income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and financial reporting. Students with adequate knowledge of these areas may be better prepared to understand the financial operations of Islamic financial institutions. Islamic finance accounting education can therefore provide the theoretical and practical foundation required to develop students’ knowledge of specialized accounting practices. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities and other relevant tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment instrument designed to measure Islamic finance accounting education and students’ knowledge of accounting practices in Islamic financial institutions. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that Islamic finance accounting education has a significant positive effect on students’ knowledge of accounting practices in Islamic financial institutions. Students who receive adequate exposure to Islamic finance accounting concepts are expected to demonstrate stronger understanding of the accounting treatment and reporting of Islamic financial transactions. The findings may also indicate that practical exposure to Islamic finance accounting cases and transactions can strengthen students’ ability to understand specialized accounting practices within Islamic financial institutions. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of specialized accounting subjects. Accounting educators may need to complement theoretical instruction with practical activities involving Islamic financial transactions, accounting procedures, and financial reporting situations. Case studies, transaction analysis, practical accounting exercises, and simplified financial reports from Islamic financial institutions can help students connect classroom concepts with real-world accounting practices. Such approaches may improve students’ understanding of Islamic finance accounting and strengthen their preparation for professional accounting responsibilities. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, university administrators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and Islamic financial institutions. Students may acquire specialized knowledge that can support their academic and professional development, while lecturers may gain useful information for improving Islamic finance accounting instruction. Curriculum developers and university administrators may use the findings to strengthen specialized accounting content, while Islamic financial institutions may benefit from graduates who possess a better understanding of accounting practices applicable to their operations. The study recommends that accounting education programmes strengthen Islamic finance accounting education through practical transaction analysis, case studies, financial reporting exercises, and classroom simulations involving Islamic financial institutions. Accounting lecturers should expose students to relevant Islamic financial contracts and accounting practices and provide opportunities to apply accounting principles to realistic Islamic finance situations. Universities should also provide appropriate instructional materials and encourage collaboration with professionals in the Islamic finance sector. The study concludes that effective Islamic finance accounting education can significantly improve students’ knowledge of accounting practices in Islamic financial institutions and better prepare them for specialized accounting responsibilities within the financial sector.
