Effect of Manufacturing Account Instruction on Students’ Ability to Prepare Manufacturing Financial Statements in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Manufacturing Account Instruction refers to the teaching and learning activities designed to help students understand the accounting procedures involved in determining the cost of production and preparing financial statements for manufacturing businesses. Knowledge of Manufacturing Accounts is important because manufacturing entities require specific accounting treatments for raw materials, direct labour, factory overheads, work-in-progress, and cost of production. However, students may experience difficulties in applying these procedures when instruction is predominantly theoretical. This study therefore examines the effect of Manufacturing Account Instruction on students’ ability to prepare manufacturing financial statements in Nigerian universities. Manufacturing Account Instruction exposes students to the principles and procedures involved in preparing Manufacturing Accounts and related financial statements. Through lectures, worked examples, practical exercises, transaction analysis, and case-based activities, students can learn how to classify manufacturing costs, calculate prime cost, determine factory overheads, account for opening and closing work-in-progress, and establish the cost of goods manufactured. These instructional activities can provide students with opportunities to understand the relationship between manufacturing costs and financial statement preparation. Students’ ability to prepare manufacturing financial statements refers to their capacity to correctly apply accounting principles and procedures when preparing financial statements for manufacturing entities. This ability involves identifying and classifying manufacturing costs, preparing Manufacturing Accounts, determining the cost of production, and incorporating relevant information into financial statements. Effective Manufacturing Account Instruction may improve this ability by providing students with structured opportunities to practise cost classification, calculations, statement preparation, and interpretation of manufacturing accounting information. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on Manufacturing Account Instruction and students’ ability to prepare manufacturing financial statements. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that Manufacturing Account Instruction has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to prepare manufacturing financial statements. Students who receive effective instruction and adequate practical exposure may demonstrate greater competence in classifying manufacturing costs, determining cost of production, preparing Manufacturing Accounts, and presenting relevant financial information accurately. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Financial Accounting in universities. Lecturers may need to combine theoretical explanations with practical exercises that expose students to realistic manufacturing accounting situations. Worked examples, cost classification activities, manufacturing transaction exercises, statement preparation tasks, and case studies may provide students with meaningful opportunities to strengthen their practical accounting skills. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, university administrators, curriculum planners, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger competence in manufacturing accounting and financial statement preparation, while lecturers may gain insight into effective approaches for teaching specialized accounting procedures. University administrators and curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen the practical components of Financial Accounting courses. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen Manufacturing Account Instruction through practical exercises, worked examples, transaction-based activities, and case studies involving manufacturing businesses. Lecturers should provide students with regular opportunities to classify manufacturing costs, calculate cost of production, prepare Manufacturing Accounts, and complete related financial statements. The study concludes that effective Manufacturing Account Instruction can improve students’ ability to prepare manufacturing financial statements and contribute to stronger practical competence in Financial Accounting.
