Effect of Petty Cash Voucher Exercises on Students’ Petty Cash Management Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Petty cash management is an important practical accounting competency that enables accounting personnel to control small-value organizational expenditures, document payments, maintain petty cash records, and account for cash balances accurately. Effective petty cash management requires appropriate preparation and use of petty cash vouchers, proper authorization of expenditures, accurate recording of transactions, classification of expenses, maintenance of supporting documents, and periodic reconciliation of the petty cash fund. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to practise these procedures through realistic accounting-office activities. Petty Cash Voucher Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to prepare, examine, authorize, record, and reconcile petty cash transactions using simulated business situations. Such exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply petty cash procedures accurately and develop practical competencies required in accounting workplaces. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Petty Cash Voucher Exercises on petty cash management skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Petty Cash Voucher Exercises may influence students’ petty cash management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, petty cash management skills assessment scales, simulated petty cash vouchers, imprest-account exercises, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, transaction-recording exercises, reconciliation tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Petty Cash Voucher Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as petty cash voucher identification, voucher preparation, voucher numbering, transaction-date recording, payee identification, payment description, amount recording, amount-in-words recording, amount-in-figures recording, expense classification, expense authorization, authorized-signature verification, voucher approval, supporting-document verification, receipt attachment, invoice attachment, payment evidence, expenditure justification, petty cash custodian responsibilities, imprest-system procedures, imprest amount determination, cash allocation, cash disbursement, reimbursement procedures, replenishment procedures, petty cash-book preparation, petty cash-book recording, analysis-column recording, cash-balance calculation, voucher-register maintenance, transaction classification, source-document preparation, cash-counting procedures, cash verification, cash-security procedures, custody procedures, cash handling, change management, cash disbursement, transaction authorization, expenditure control, spending-limit compliance, duplicate-voucher identification, missing-voucher identification, unauthorized-payment identification, incorrect-amount identification, incorrect-date identification, incorrect-description identification, incorrect-account identification, unsupported-expenditure identification, altered-voucher identification, fraudulent-document identification, expenditure-error identification, recording-error identification, reconciliation procedures, cash-count reconciliation, voucher reconciliation, petty cash-book reconciliation, imprest reconciliation, cash-shortage identification, cash-surplus identification, discrepancy investigation, error correction, adjusting-entry preparation, journal-entry preparation, ledger posting, expense-account updating, cash-account updating, financial-record updating, document filing, voucher filing, voucher indexing, voucher retrieval, document tracking, audit-trail maintenance, internal-control procedures, segregation of duties, authorization controls, verification controls, review procedures, approval procedures, periodic reporting, petty cash reporting, expenditure monitoring, cash monitoring, budget monitoring, accounting-software activities, spreadsheet activities, digital petty cash records, electronic voucher preparation, electronic document management, digital approval procedures, electronic record verification, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, role-play activities, case studies, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging petty cash scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Petty Cash Voucher Exercises, practical experiences, and petty cash management skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Petty Cash Voucher Exercises on students’ petty cash management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, petty cash management skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings.
