Effect of Professional Accounting Workshops on Students’ Knowledge of Contemporary Workplace Practices in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Professional accounting workshops are structured learning activities designed to expose students to current accounting practices, professional expectations, workplace procedures, and developments within the accounting profession. Students’ knowledge of contemporary workplace practices refers to their understanding of the procedures, technologies, professional standards, communication patterns, ethical expectations, and work processes required in modern accounting environments. The changing nature of accounting practice has created a need for students to acquire knowledge that extends beyond conventional classroom instruction. This study therefore examines the effect of professional accounting workshops on students’ knowledge of contemporary workplace practices in Nigerian polytechnics. Professional accounting workshops provide opportunities for students to interact with accounting practitioners, professional bodies, industry experts, and other experienced professionals. Workshop activities may include presentations, practical demonstrations, case studies, discussions, simulations, and demonstrations of current accounting technologies and procedures. Through these activities, students can gain exposure to real-world accounting practices and develop a better understanding of how accounting knowledge is applied within contemporary workplaces. Knowledge of contemporary workplace practices involves students’ understanding of current accounting procedures, digital accounting tools, professional communication, ethical conduct, teamwork, data management, financial reporting practices, workplace documentation, and other activities associated with modern accounting employment. Professional accounting workshops can influence this knowledge by providing students with practical information and direct exposure to current professional expectations. Such exposure may help students connect theoretical classroom knowledge with actual workplace practices and understand the competencies required in contemporary accounting environments. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in professional accounting workshops and students’ knowledge of contemporary workplace practices. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of professional accounting workshops on students’ knowledge of contemporary workplace practices. The study is expected to establish that professional accounting workshops have a positive effect on students’ knowledge of contemporary workplace practices. Students who participate in relevant and well-structured professional workshops are expected to demonstrate greater understanding of current accounting procedures, workplace technologies, professional standards, communication practices, and ethical expectations. The study may also indicate that interaction with practicing professionals provides students with practical knowledge that complements formal classroom instruction. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may need to complement conventional classroom instruction with professional workshops led by practicing accountants and other industry experts. Workshops can provide students with opportunities to examine real workplace situations, observe current accounting practices, discuss professional challenges, and develop greater awareness of contemporary expectations within the accounting profession. The study will be beneficial to accounting students, lecturers, polytechnic administrators, curriculum planners, professional accounting bodies, employers, and policymakers. Students may gain improved knowledge of workplace practices and greater preparedness for professional accounting employment. Lecturers and curriculum planners may obtain useful information for strengthening the practical content of accounting education, while professional bodies and employers may contribute to the development of graduates who are better acquainted with contemporary workplace requirements. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should regularly organize professional accounting workshops involving practicing accountants, professional bodies, accounting firms, and other relevant industry experts. Workshop content should cover contemporary accounting technologies, professional ethics, workplace communication, digital accounting practices, financial reporting, teamwork, and other relevant workplace procedures. Stronger collaboration between polytechnics and the accounting industry should also be encouraged. It is concluded that professional accounting workshops can enhance students’ knowledge of contemporary workplace practices and strengthen the practical relevance of accounting education.
