Effect of Professional Certification Awareness on Accounting Education Students’ Commitment to Professional Development in Nigeria
Abstract
Professional certification awareness refers to students’ knowledge and understanding of relevant professional accounting qualifications, certification requirements, examination processes, career benefits, and professional membership opportunities, while commitment to professional development represents students’ willingness and continuous effort to improve their accounting knowledge, skills, competencies, and professional capabilities. Awareness of professional certification is important because accounting education students need to understand the qualifications and continuous learning opportunities available within the accounting profession. However, limited awareness of professional certification pathways may reduce students’ motivation to pursue additional professional development beyond their university education. This study therefore examines the effect of professional certification awareness on accounting education students’ commitment to professional development in Nigeria. Professional certification awareness may be developed through career counselling, professional orientation programmes, interactions with practicing accountants, seminars, workshops, mentorship activities, and information provided by professional accounting organizations. These activities can expose students to available accounting certifications, eligibility requirements, examination structures, areas of specialization, continuing professional education, and potential career opportunities associated with professional qualifications. Increased awareness can provide students with clearer information about the steps required to progress from university education into professional accounting practice. Commitment to professional development involves students’ willingness to participate in activities that improve their professional knowledge, technical skills, practical abilities, ethical understanding, and career competencies. Such activities may include professional examinations, workshops, seminars, training programmes, professional memberships, self-directed learning, and continuous skills development. Professional certification awareness can influence this commitment by helping students understand the relevance of professional qualifications and continuous learning to their future accounting careers. Students who are adequately informed about professional certification opportunities may therefore be more motivated to pursue ongoing professional development. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ awareness of professional certification and their commitment to professional development. The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at an appropriate level of significance. The study is expected to establish that professional certification awareness has a significant positive effect on accounting education students’ commitment to professional development. Students with greater awareness of professional certification opportunities are expected to demonstrate stronger willingness to participate in professional examinations, training programmes, workshops, seminars, and other continuous learning activities. The findings may further indicate that clear knowledge of professional qualification requirements helps students develop stronger career goals and greater motivation for continuous professional improvement. The findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education. Integrating professional certification information into accounting programmes can help students understand the relationship between university education, professional qualifications, and continuous professional development. Lecturers and career counsellors can provide students with relevant information about certification pathways and encourage participation in professional development activities. This may promote a stronger culture of continuous learning among accounting education students. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, university administrators, career counsellors, professional accounting bodies, accounting practitioners, curriculum developers, and educational policymakers. Students may gain clearer knowledge of professional certification opportunities and become more motivated to develop their professional capabilities. Universities and professional accounting organizations may also use the findings to strengthen career guidance, professional orientation, and student engagement programmes that promote continuous professional development. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen professional certification awareness programmes through career counselling, professional orientation sessions, workshops, seminars, mentorship, and direct interaction with accounting professionals. Accounting education programmes should provide students with clear and current information about relevant certification requirements, professional examinations, membership opportunities, and continuous professional development activities. The study concludes that increased awareness of professional certification can significantly strengthen accounting education students’ commitment to continuous professional development and better prepare them for long-term careers in accounting.
