Effect of Professional Networking Activities on Accounting Education Students’ Career Development Skills in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Professional networking activities are an important component of career development because they provide students with opportunities to establish professional connections, exchange knowledge, access career information, and develop relationships with individuals and organizations within their field. Accounting Education students require career development skills to make informed career decisions, identify professional opportunities, develop employability competencies, and prepare for successful entry into the accounting profession. However, some students may have limited exposure to professional networks and activities that can support their career preparation. This study therefore examines the effect of professional networking activities on Accounting Education students’ career development skills in Nigerian universities. Professional networking activities involve structured and informal opportunities through which students interact with professionals, lecturers, alumni, employers, professional associations, and other individuals within the accounting and business environment. These activities may include career fairs, professional seminars, conferences, alumni engagements, mentorship programmes, professional association events, industry visits, and networking sessions. Participation in such activities can expose students to professional expectations, career information, workplace experiences, and opportunities for developing valuable professional relationships. Accounting Education students’ career development skills refer to their ability to identify career interests, set professional goals, explore career opportunities, prepare for employment, communicate professionally, build professional relationships, and make informed career decisions. These skills are important for helping students transition effectively from university into the workplace and adapt to changing professional requirements. Regular participation in professional networking activities may provide students with practical exposure and information that can strengthen their career planning and development. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on professional networking activities and students’ career development skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while the hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that professional networking activities have a significant positive effect on Accounting Education students’ career development skills. Participation in networking activities is expected to enhance students’ awareness of career opportunities, professional communication, goal setting, relationship building, and preparedness for employment and professional advancement. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in Nigerian universities. Accounting departments may need to provide students with more opportunities to interact with accounting professionals, employers, alumni, professional associations, and other industry stakeholders. Career fairs, mentorship programmes, professional events, industry visits, and networking sessions may be incorporated into students’ academic experiences to strengthen their exposure to the professional environment. The study is expected to benefit Accounting Education students, lecturers, university administrators, career development units, professional accounting bodies, employers, and curriculum developers. Students may gain improved career development skills and greater awareness of professional opportunities, while lecturers and career advisers may obtain useful insights for strengthening career-oriented activities. Universities and professional bodies may also use the findings to develop stronger partnerships that support students’ transition into professional accounting careers. The study recommends that universities and accounting departments should strengthen professional networking opportunities for Accounting Education students through career events, mentorship, alumni engagement, industry interactions, professional seminars, and structured networking programmes. Students should also be encouraged to actively participate in relevant professional activities and develop appropriate communication and relationship-building skills. The study concludes that effective professional networking activities can enhance Accounting Education students’ career development skills and contribute to improved preparedness for professional opportunities.
