Effect of Questionnaire Design Training on Accounting Students’ Ability to Develop Valid Research Instruments in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Questionnaire design training refers to structured instruction that equips students with the knowledge and skills required to develop appropriate questionnaires for academic research. The ability to develop valid research instruments is important for accounting students because the quality of data collected in a study depends greatly on the suitability of the instrument used. However, some students experience difficulties in translating research objectives into clear questionnaire items, selecting appropriate response formats, avoiding ambiguous questions, and ensuring that instruments adequately measure the concepts being investigated. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of questionnaire design training on accounting students’ ability to develop valid research instruments in Nigerian universities. Questionnaire design training introduces students to the major principles and procedures involved in developing research questionnaires. The training may cover the identification of research variables, translation of research objectives into measurable items, wording of questions, selection of response scales, sequencing of questionnaire items, avoidance of leading or double-barrelled questions, and appropriate formatting of instruments. Students may also be trained to review questionnaire items, conduct preliminary testing, and make necessary revisions before administering an instrument. These activities can provide practical experience in developing questionnaires that are clear, relevant, and suitable for research purposes. Accounting students’ ability to develop valid research instruments refers to their capacity to construct instruments that appropriately measure the concepts and information required for a research study. This involves aligning questionnaire items with research objectives, using clear and relevant questions, selecting suitable response options, and ensuring adequate coverage of the subject being investigated. Questionnaire design training may improve this ability by providing students with practical knowledge and opportunities to apply established principles of instrument development. Students who receive systematic training may therefore become more capable of producing research instruments that are appropriate for collecting dependable data. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the effect of questionnaire design training on students’ ability to develop valid research instruments. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian universities. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured instrument designed to assess students’ knowledge and practical ability in questionnaire development before and after exposure to questionnaire design training. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the effect of the training on students’ ability to develop valid research instruments. The study is expected to establish that questionnaire design training has a positive effect on accounting students’ ability to develop valid research instruments. Students exposed to structured questionnaire design training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to formulate clear research questions, align questionnaire items with research objectives, select appropriate response formats, avoid poorly constructed items, and organize instruments systematically. The study is also expected to indicate that practical training can strengthen students’ competence in translating research requirements into appropriate data collection instruments. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting research methods lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical questionnaire development rather than relying mainly on theoretical explanations of research instruments. Students can be given opportunities to design, review, test, and revise questionnaires as part of their research methodology training. Such practical activities may help bridge the gap between knowledge of research methods and the actual skills required to construct appropriate research instruments for undergraduate research projects. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, research supervisors, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, and university authorities. Students may benefit from stronger instrument-development skills that can improve the quality of their research projects. Lecturers and research supervisors may gain useful information for improving research methodology instruction and project supervision. Accounting departments and curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen practical research training and ensure that students receive adequate preparation in the development of research instruments. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian universities incorporate practical questionnaire design training into accounting research methodology courses. Lecturers should provide students with opportunities to develop questionnaire items, evaluate their clarity and relevance, test draft instruments, and make appropriate revisions. Research supervisors should also provide constructive guidance on the alignment between research objectives and questionnaire items during project supervision. The study concludes that effective questionnaire design training can strengthen accounting students’ ability to develop valid research instruments and improve their competence in conducting academic research.
