Effect of Receivables Management Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Assess Business Financial Efficiency in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the effect of receivables management knowledge on students’ ability to assess business financial efficiency in Nigeria. Receivables management knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the principles, procedures and techniques involved in managing amounts owed to a business by its customers and other debtors. Business financial efficiency refers to the ability of a business to utilize its financial resources effectively, maintain adequate cash flows, control costs and achieve desirable financial outcomes. The study was motivated by the importance of effective receivables management in maintaining the financial efficiency and liquidity of business organizations and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical skills for evaluating financial activities. Poor management of receivables can result in delayed cash collections, increased bad debts, reduced working capital and financial pressure on a business. Students with adequate knowledge of receivables management may therefore be better equipped to understand how credit sales, debt collection and outstanding customer balances influence business financial efficiency. The study consequently investigated whether receivables management knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to assess business financial efficiency in Nigeria. Receivables constitute an important component of current assets and can have a considerable influence on the financial operations of a business. Effective receivables management requires knowledge of credit policies, credit terms, customer balances, collection procedures, ageing of receivables and the risks associated with granting credit. Students who understand these areas may be better able to evaluate how efficiently a business converts credit sales into cash and determine whether outstanding receivables are being managed appropriately. Knowledge of receivables turnover and collection periods can also help students assess the speed at which customers settle their obligations and identify possible weaknesses in credit and collection practices. This knowledge is particularly relevant to Accounting Education students because it connects accounting principles with practical financial management, working capital management and business performance evaluation. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ receivables management knowledge and their ability to assess business financial efficiency. Receivables management knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of credit sales, credit policies, credit terms, receivables collection, ageing schedules, bad debts, receivables turnover and collection periods. Students’ ability to assess financial efficiency was considered in terms of their capacity to evaluate the effectiveness of credit management, assess cash collection, identify inefficient receivables practices, interpret financial information and determine the effect of outstanding debts on business operations. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that receivables management knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to assess business financial efficiency. Students with adequate knowledge of receivables management may be better able to understand the financial consequences of extending credit to customers and delaying the collection of outstanding debts. Knowledge of receivables turnover can help students evaluate how effectively a business collects amounts owed by customers, while understanding collection periods can enable them to assess the speed and efficiency of cash recovery. Students may also be better prepared to recognize the financial implications of excessive outstanding receivables, including reduced cash availability and increased exposure to bad debts. These competencies can provide students with a stronger basis for evaluating the efficiency of business financial operations. Furthermore, practical exposure to receivables management can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning and financial decision-making skills. Classroom exercises involving customer accounts, receivables ageing schedules, credit policies, collection periods and business cases can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic financial situations. Students can be required to examine receivables information, identify collection problems and determine possible measures for improving financial efficiency. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing accounting concepts and develop the ability to interpret receivables information in relation to cash flow, working capital and overall business performance. Regular practice can also improve students’ confidence in assessing credit-related financial information and making evidence-based judgments. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigeria. Students can benefit from developing practical knowledge of receivables management and understanding how effective credit and collection practices influence business financial efficiency. Lecturers should provide regular exercises involving receivables turnover, collection periods, ageing analysis and credit management. Accounting departments should also integrate practical receivables management activities into relevant accounting, financial management and management accounting courses. Business cases involving delayed customer payments, bad debts and inefficient credit policies can expose students to realistic financial situations and help them understand the importance of effective receivables management. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction on receivables management with practical exercises, financial analysis activities and realistic business cases. Students should be encouraged to develop a clear understanding of credit policies, receivables collection, ageing analysis, receivables turnover and the financial implications of outstanding debts. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical opportunities for students to analyze receivables information and evaluate its effect on business financial efficiency. In conclusion, strengthening receivables management knowledge can improve students’ ability to assess business financial efficiency and contribute to stronger financial analysis, working capital management skills, analytical reasoning, decision-making competence, accounting knowledge and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigeria.
