Effect of Referencing Skills Training on Research Writing Competence among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Referencing is an essential academic and professional skill that enables students to acknowledge sources appropriately, support academic arguments, maintain scholarly integrity, and organize research information systematically. Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics are expected to develop competence in academic research and writing as part of their preparation for teaching, accounting practice, and further academic development. However, some students may experience difficulties in applying appropriate referencing conventions, citing sources accurately, integrating evidence into academic writing, and preparing complete reference lists. These difficulties may affect the quality, credibility, and originality of their research writing. Referencing Skills Training provides students with structured instruction and practical activities on source identification, in-text citation, reference-list preparation, citation styles, paraphrasing, quotation, source evaluation, and management of bibliographic information. Such training may improve students' ability to produce well-supported, properly documented, and academically acceptable research work. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Referencing Skills Training on research writing competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Information Literacy Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop research and writing skills through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active application. Information Literacy Theory emphasizes students' ability to identify, locate, evaluate, organize, and use information effectively in academic research. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Referencing Skills Training may influence research writing competence among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, referencing skills assessment instruments, research writing competence tests, practical referencing tasks, research-writing assignments, writing-performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Referencing Skills Training will be assessed using indicators such as source identification, source selection, source evaluation, bibliographic information extraction, author identification, publication-date identification, title identification, publisher identification, journal identification, volume identification, issue identification, page-number identification, digital-object-identifier identification, website-source identification, database-source identification, book referencing, journal-article referencing, conference-paper referencing, report referencing, thesis referencing, dissertation referencing, government-publication referencing, organizational-publication referencing, webpage referencing, electronic-source referencing, in-text citation, parenthetical citation, narrative citation, direct quotation, indirect quotation, paraphrasing, summarizing, citation placement, citation consistency, citation completeness, reference-list preparation, alphabetical arrangement, chronological arrangement, reference formatting, punctuation, capitalization, italicization, quotation-mark usage, title formatting, author-name formatting, multiple-author referencing, corporate-author referencing, no-author referencing, no-date referencing, secondary-source referencing, citation of multiple sources, citation of multiple works by the same author, citation of works published in the same year, citation of edited books, chapter referencing, translation referencing, online-source referencing, retrieval-date recording where required, citation-style identification, citation-style application, APA-style referencing, MLA-style referencing, Harvard-style referencing, institutional referencing requirements, citation-management software, reference-management tools, digital bibliographic organization, reference importing, reference editing, duplicate-reference detection, reference-library organization, citation insertion, automatic reference-list generation, source tracking, research-note organization, plagiarism awareness, academic-integrity awareness, copyright awareness, source attribution, evidence integration, research ethics, citation verification, reference verification, proofreading, editing, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, repeated practice, peer review, lecturer feedback, self-assessment, reflective practice, and progressively challenging referencing activities. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Referencing Skills Training, referencing practices, and research writing competence. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Referencing Skills Training on students' research writing competence. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, research writing competence scores before and after the training may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional research-writing instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Referencing Skills Training has a significant positive effect on research writing competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured referencing training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify, evaluate, document, cite, organize, and integrate academic sources into research writing. Source-identification activities may improve students' ability to recognize relevant academic materials. Source-selection and evaluation activities may strengthen students' ability to distinguish credible and appropriate sources. Bibliographic-information exercises may improve students' accuracy in recording author names, publication dates, titles, publishers, journal details, page numbers, and digital identifiers. Practical exercises involving books, journal articles, conference papers, reports, theses, dissertations, government publications, organizational publications, and electronic sources may broaden students' referencing competence. In-text citation exercises may improve students' ability to acknowledge sources within academic writing. Direct-quotation activities may strengthen students' ability to reproduce source material accurately and attribute it appropriately. Paraphrasing and summarizing exercises may improve students' ability to integrate evidence while maintaining their own academic voice. Citation-placement and consistency activities may strengthen the organization and credibility of students' research arguments. Reference-list preparation may improve students' ability to produce complete and properly formatted lists of sources. Alphabetical and chronological arrangement exercises may strengthen students' ability to organize references systematically. Formatting activities may improve students' application of appropriate punctuation, capitalization, italics, title formatting, and author-name conventions. Multiple-author and corporate-author referencing exercises may improve students' ability to handle complex source information. Secondary-source activities may strengthen students' understanding of indirect citation. Citation-management software exercises may improve students' ability to organize digital references and insert citations efficiently. Duplicate-reference detection may improve bibliographic accuracy. Source-tracking activities may strengthen students' ability to maintain complete records of materials used throughout the research process. Research-note organization may improve students' ability to connect evidence with appropriate sources. Plagiarism-awareness activities may strengthen students' understanding of proper attribution and academic integrity. Copyright and research-ethics activities may improve students' responsible use of academic information. Evidence-integration exercises may strengthen students' ability to connect cited sources with research arguments. Citation and reference verification activities may improve accuracy before submission. Proofreading and editing exercises may improve the overall quality of students' research documents. Practical demonstrations may provide clear models of appropriate referencing procedures. Guided exercises may provide structured support during skill development. Individual assignments may strengthen independent referencing ability. Group activities may promote collaborative learning and peer support. Case studies may expose students to realistic research-writing situations. Repeated practice may improve accuracy, consistency, confidence, and independence. Peer review may help students identify referencing and writing errors. Lecturer feedback may guide students in correcting weaknesses in citation and reference formatting. Self-assessment may encourage students to evaluate their own research-writing performance. Reflective practice may help students learn from referencing errors and improve subsequent academic work. Progressively challenging activities may prepare students for more complex research-writing tasks. The study therefore expects well-structured, practical, and adequately supervised Referencing Skills Training to contribute significantly to improved research writing competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
