Effect of Single-Entry Accounting Exercises on Financial Position Determination Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Single-entry accounting is an important area of accounting education that enables students to understand how financial information can be reconstructed when complete double-entry accounting records are unavailable. Accounting education students require practical skills to analyse incomplete records, prepare statements of affairs, determine opening and closing capital, calculate profit or loss, and establish the financial position of a business from limited accounting information. However, conventional approaches to teaching single-entry accounting may emphasize theoretical explanations and routine calculations without providing sufficient opportunities for students to apply reconstruction procedures to realistic accounting situations. Single-Entry Accounting Exercises provide students with structured opportunities to analyse incomplete accounting records, reconstruct missing financial information, prepare statements of affairs, determine capital balances, and establish the financial position of businesses. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of single-entry accounting exercises on financial position determination skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Mastery Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' engagement with practical single-entry accounting activities. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Mastery Learning Theory emphasizes repeated practice, formative assessment, corrective feedback, and opportunities for learners to achieve clearly defined competencies. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how single-entry accounting exercises may influence students' financial position determination skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Single-entry accounting exercises will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of practical exercises, preparation of statements of affairs, determination of opening capital, determination of closing capital, calculation of profit or loss, treatment of drawings, additional capital contributions, reconstruction of cash accounts, bank accounts, debtors' accounts, creditors' accounts, calculation of credit sales and purchases, determination of missing expenses and incomes, accounting equation application, reconstruction of incomplete records, preparation of final accounts where applicable, case-based exercises, spreadsheet-based activities, accounting software, lecturer guidance, feedback, and opportunities for repeated practice. Students' financial position determination skills will be assessed using indicators such as identification of available financial information, preparation of statements of affairs, accurate determination of assets and liabilities, calculation of opening and closing capital, determination of net worth, calculation of profit or loss from changes in capital, treatment of drawings and additional capital, reconstruction of missing accounting information, classification of assets and liabilities, reconciliation of financial information, preparation of financial position statements from incomplete records, identification and correction of inconsistencies, interpretation of financial position information, numerical accuracy, analytical reasoning, and ability to determine financial position from unfamiliar single-entry accounting scenarios. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized financial position determination skills tests, practical single-entry accounting tasks, incomplete-record scenarios, case studies, spreadsheet exercises, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, single-entry accounting learning experiences, practical exercise exposure, and levels of financial position determination skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of single-entry accounting exercises on students' financial position determination skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial position determination skill scores before and after exposure to single-entry accounting exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that single-entry accounting exercises have a significant positive effect on financial position determination skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students who regularly engage in structured single-entry accounting exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to analyse incomplete accounting information, prepare statements of affairs, determine capital balances, calculate profit or loss, identify assets and liabilities, and establish the financial position of a business than students exposed primarily to conventional lecture-based instruction. Practical exercises may strengthen students' logical reasoning and analytical abilities because learners must establish relationships among available financial information and use accounting principles to determine missing figures. Repeated exposure to progressively complex single-entry scenarios may improve students' numerical accuracy, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and confidence in reconstructing financial information. Case-based exercises may further help students apply accounting principles to realistic situations involving incomplete or poorly maintained records. Spreadsheet-based and computerized accounting activities may strengthen students' ability to organize financial information and perform reconstruction procedures efficiently. However, inadequate practical accounting resources, limited access to accounting technology, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, limited lecturer training, and students' difficulty in understanding the relationship between capital, assets, liabilities, and profit may reduce the effectiveness of single-entry accounting exercises. The study therefore expects structured, practical, progressively challenging, and technology-supported single-entry accounting exercises to contribute significantly to improved financial position determination skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on single-entry accounting exercises, financial position determination skills, accounting education, bookkeeping education, financial accounting education, practical accounting competence, experiential learning, constructivist learning, mastery learning, accounting pedagogy, incomplete records accounting, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, employers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for increasing practical single-entry accounting activities, developing realistic Nigerian incomplete-record cases, strengthening students' training in statements of affairs and financial position reconstruction, integrating spreadsheets and accounting software into single-entry exercises, training accounting educators in practical reconstruction instruction, using competency-based financial position assessments, providing continuous corrective feedback, and creating opportunities for accounting education students to develop the analytical and financial position determination skills required for effective accounting practice in Nigeria.
