Effect of Solvency Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Evaluate Business Financial Stability in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
This study examined the effect of solvency knowledge on students’ ability to evaluate business financial stability in Nigerian universities. Solvency knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the concepts, principles and financial measures used to assess a business’s ability to meet its long-term financial obligations. Business financial stability refers to the capacity of a business to maintain a sound financial position, meet its financial commitments and sustain its operations over time. The study was motivated by the importance of solvency analysis in understanding the long-term financial condition of a business and the need for accounting students to develop adequate skills for interpreting financial information. Some students may understand basic accounting concepts but experience difficulties when required to assess long-term financial strength or interpret information relating to debt and financial obligations. The study therefore investigated whether solvency knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to evaluate business financial stability in Nigerian universities. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ solvency knowledge and their ability to evaluate business financial stability. Solvency knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of long-term liabilities, shareholders’ equity, debt-equity relationships, financial leverage and solvency ratios, while financial stability evaluation was considered in terms of students’ ability to assess long-term financial strength, interpret financial obligations, identify financial risks and determine the sustainability of a business’s financial position. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that solvency knowledge has a significant effect on students’ ability to evaluate business financial stability. Students with adequate knowledge of solvency concepts may be better able to understand the relationship between a business’s assets, liabilities and equity and assess its ability to meet long-term obligations. Knowledge of solvency measures can help students identify excessive debt levels, understand financial leverage and recognize possible risks associated with long-term borrowing. It can also enable students to interpret financial statements more effectively and determine whether a business has a financially sustainable structure. Furthermore, practical exposure to solvency analysis can strengthen students’ analytical and decision-making skills. Classroom exercises involving financial statements, debt analysis, solvency ratios and realistic business cases can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical financial situations. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing accounting definitions and formulas and develop the ability to interpret financial results and explain their implications for business stability. The findings will be useful to accounting students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian universities. Lecturers should provide regular practical exercises requiring students to analyze long-term financial obligations, calculate and interpret solvency measures and evaluate the financial stability of businesses. Accounting departments should also incorporate solvency analysis and financial statement interpretation into relevant accounting courses. Students should be encouraged to develop both theoretical and practical knowledge of solvency and apply it to realistic business situations. The study concludes that strengthening solvency knowledge can improve students’ ability to evaluate business financial stability and contribute to stronger financial analysis, analytical skills, decision-making ability, accounting competence and professional preparedness.
