Abstract
Spreadsheet-based data analysis has become increasingly important in accounting education because modern accountants are expected to work with large amounts of financial and business data. Spreadsheet-based data analysis refers to the use of spreadsheet applications to organize, calculate, manipulate, summarize, and interpret data for decision-making purposes. Analytical skills refer to students’ ability to examine information, identify patterns and relationships, compare data, solve problems, and draw logical conclusions. This study therefore examines the effect of spreadsheet-based data analysis on the analytical skills of Accounting Education students. Spreadsheet applications provide students with practical tools for sorting data, applying formulas, creating tables, generating charts, calculating financial measures, and analyzing datasets. Through spreadsheet-based activities, students can work with accounting and business information in a structured digital environment. They can also perform repeated calculations, compare alternative outcomes, identify changes in financial data, and present analytical results. Regular engagement with these activities can provide students with practical opportunities to apply accounting knowledge while developing their ability to work with quantitative information. Analytical skills are essential to Accounting Education students because accounting practice requires more than the recording and preparation of financial information. Students need to examine financial data, identify significant changes, interpret relationships among figures, evaluate business situations, and reach appropriate conclusions. Spreadsheet-based data analysis can support the development of these abilities by requiring students to manipulate information, perform calculations, compare results, identify trends, and interpret outputs. Effective use of spreadsheets can therefore connect accounting knowledge with practical analytical tasks. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical analytical skills assessment involving spreadsheet-based data analysis tasks. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that spreadsheet-based data analysis has a significant positive effect on the analytical skills of Accounting Education students. Students exposed to spreadsheet-based analytical activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to organize data, perform calculations, identify patterns, compare financial information, interpret results, and draw logical conclusions from business data. The study may also indicate that limited practical exposure to spreadsheet analysis can restrict students’ ability to apply accounting knowledge effectively when dealing with quantitative business information. The findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education. Accounting lecturers may need to integrate spreadsheet-based analytical activities into accounting courses instead of limiting spreadsheet use to basic calculations. Students can be given practical datasets requiring them to organize information, apply formulas, analyze financial results, create charts, and explain their findings. These activities can promote active learning and help students develop analytical abilities that are relevant to technology-driven accounting environments. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, and employers. Students may develop stronger analytical and digital accounting competencies, while lecturers may gain insight into effective ways of using spreadsheets to strengthen accounting instruction. Tertiary institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to improve technology-oriented accounting curricula. Employers may also benefit from graduates who can efficiently analyze accounting and business information using spreadsheet applications. The study recommends that Accounting Education programmes should incorporate regular spreadsheet-based data analysis exercises into relevant accounting courses. Lecturers should provide students with realistic accounting and business datasets that require them to perform calculations, organize information, identify patterns, interpret results, and communicate analytical conclusions. Institutions should also provide adequate access to spreadsheet applications and practical learning resources. The study concludes that effective integration of spreadsheet-based data analysis into Accounting Education can significantly enhance students’ analytical skills and strengthen their preparedness for modern accounting practice.
