Effect of Statistical Package Training on Accounting Students’ Ability to Analyze Research Data in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Statistical package training refers to structured instruction that equips students with the practical knowledge and skills required to use statistical software for organizing, processing, analyzing, and interpreting research data. The ability to analyze research data is important to accounting students because accounting research increasingly requires the use of quantitative data and statistical techniques to investigate research problems and answer research questions. However, some students may experience difficulties in selecting appropriate statistical procedures, entering and managing data, interpreting statistical outputs, and drawing meaningful conclusions from research results. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of statistical package training on accounting students’ ability to analyze research data in Nigerian universities. Statistical package training introduces students to the procedures involved in using statistical software for research data analysis. The training may cover data entry, variable definition, data coding, data cleaning, descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and interpretation of statistical outputs. Through guided practical exercises, students can work with research datasets and learn how different statistical procedures are applied to address specific research questions. Regular exposure to statistical software may provide students with practical experience in handling research data more systematically and efficiently. Accounting students’ ability to analyze research data refers to their capacity to organize research data, select appropriate statistical techniques, conduct analyses correctly, interpret statistical outputs, and draw conclusions that are consistent with the evidence obtained. This ability is essential for producing meaningful and credible research findings. Statistical package training may improve students’ data analysis ability by providing practical experience in applying statistical procedures to research datasets. Through repeated exercises involving data preparation, analysis, and interpretation, students may develop greater competence in handling quantitative research data. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the effect of statistical package training on students’ ability to analyze research data. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian universities. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured research data analysis skills assessment administered to students before and after exposure to statistical package training. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test employed to determine the effect of the training on students’ ability to analyze research data. The study is expected to establish that statistical package training has a positive effect on accounting students’ ability to analyze research data. Students exposed to structured statistical software training are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in preparing research data, selecting appropriate statistical procedures, conducting quantitative analyses, interpreting statistical outputs, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. The study is also expected to indicate that practical training in statistical packages can reduce students’ difficulties in handling quantitative research data and improve their competence in applying statistical techniques. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting research methods lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical statistical software training alongside theoretical explanations of research methods. Students can be provided with research datasets and practical exercises that require them to perform appropriate statistical analyses and interpret the resulting outputs. Integrating statistical package training into accounting research methodology courses may help students connect theoretical knowledge of statistics with practical research applications. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, research supervisors, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, and university authorities. Students may benefit from improved data analysis skills that can strengthen the quality of their undergraduate research projects and prepare them for data-driven accounting responsibilities. Lecturers and research supervisors may gain useful information for improving statistical analysis instruction, while accounting departments and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen practical research methodology training. University authorities may also benefit from evidence supporting the provision of appropriate statistical software and practical learning resources. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian universities incorporate practical statistical package training into accounting research methodology courses. Lecturers should provide students with opportunities to work with realistic research datasets, perform appropriate statistical procedures, interpret software outputs, and explain research results. Universities should also provide adequate access to computers, relevant statistical software, and practical learning resources. The study concludes that effective statistical package training can improve accounting students’ ability to analyze research data and strengthen their competence in conducting quantitative academic research.
