Effect of Story-Based Instruction on Students’ Understanding of Accounting Principles in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting principles provide the foundation for understanding how financial transactions are recognized, measured, recorded, classified, and reported. However, students may experience difficulties understanding accounting principles when they are presented mainly through abstract definitions, rules, and technical explanations without meaningful contexts that help them connect accounting ideas with practical situations. Story-Based Instruction provides a learner-centred approach in which accounting concepts and principles are presented through structured narratives, business scenarios, characters, events, and realistic financial situations. By placing accounting principles within meaningful stories, students may be better able to relate abstract concepts to familiar situations, follow the sequence of financial events, identify the accounting issues involved, and understand why particular accounting treatments are appropriate. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Story-Based Instruction on students' understanding of accounting principles in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Constructivist Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes the active construction of knowledge through meaningful experiences and the connection between new information and learners' existing knowledge. Cognitive Learning Theory focuses on how learners process, organize, store, and retrieve information, while meaningful narratives may provide structures that support understanding and recall. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and application. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Story-Based Instruction may influence students' understanding of accounting principles. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Story-Based Instruction will be assessed using indicators such as accounting stories, business narratives, realistic financial scenarios, case-based stories, transaction-based narratives, characters representing business stakeholders, chronological presentation of accounting events, contextualized accounting principles, storytelling introductions, problem situations, accounting decision points, narrative explanations of accounting rules, practical examples, story-based questions, scenario-based discussions, learner-generated accounting stories, lecturer storytelling, peer storytelling, visual story materials, digital stories, audio stories, interactive stories, discussion of story outcomes, identification of accounting principles within stories, explanation of accounting treatments, reflection on accounting decisions, comparison of alternative treatments, application of principles to new situations, and opportunities for students to connect stories with accounting procedures. Students' understanding of accounting principles will be assessed using indicators such as ability to define accounting principles accurately, explain principles in their own words, identify relevant principles in accounting situations, distinguish between related principles, explain the purpose of accounting principles, apply principles to financial transactions, explain the rationale behind accounting treatments, identify appropriate accounting recognition and measurement procedures, interpret accounting information using relevant principles, identify accounting assumptions, explain the effects of accounting principles on financial statements, recognize violations of accounting principles, identify and correct misconceptions, justify accounting treatments, compare alternative accounting treatments, apply accounting principles to unfamiliar situations, solve principle-based accounting problems, interpret realistic accounting scenarios, retain knowledge of accounting principles, and transfer conceptual understanding to practical accounting situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized accounting principles understanding tests, story-based assessment tasks, scenario-based questions, case studies, practical accounting exercises, observation checklists, competency-based assessment rubrics, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Story-Based Instruction, learning experiences, and levels of accounting principles understanding. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Story-Based Instruction on students' understanding of accounting principles. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' accounting principles understanding scores before and after exposure to Story-Based Instruction may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Story-Based Instruction has a significant positive effect on students' understanding of accounting principles in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured and contextually relevant accounting stories are expected to demonstrate stronger conceptual understanding and greater ability to apply accounting principles than students receiving conventional instruction. Presenting accounting principles through realistic business situations may help students understand the circumstances in which particular principles are applied rather than memorizing isolated definitions. Chronological stories may help students follow the development of financial transactions and understand how individual events lead to specific accounting treatments. Characters representing business owners, accountants, managers, investors, customers, and other stakeholders may help students understand the practical implications of accounting decisions. Problem-based stories may encourage students to identify accounting issues, evaluate available alternatives, and determine appropriate accounting treatments. Stories involving errors or incorrect accounting decisions may help students recognize violations of accounting principles and understand how such errors affect financial information. Discussion of story outcomes may provide opportunities for students to explain their reasoning and compare alternative accounting treatments. Learner-generated stories may encourage students to reconstruct accounting principles in their own words and connect them with practical situations. Digital, audio, and visual stories may provide additional opportunities for students to engage with accounting content through multiple forms of representation. Repeated exposure to accounting principles through different business narratives may strengthen students' retention and ability to transfer knowledge to unfamiliar situations. However, poorly designed stories, excessive narrative detail, limited instructional time, students' weak prior knowledge, stories that are not aligned with accounting objectives, lecturer storytelling skills, and students' tendency to focus on the narrative rather than the underlying accounting principles may reduce the effectiveness of the strategy. The study therefore expects clear, relevant, curriculum-aligned, realistic, and instructionally focused Story-Based Instruction to contribute significantly to improved understanding of accounting principles among accounting education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Story-Based Instruction, accounting principles, conceptual understanding, constructivist learning, cognitive learning, experiential learning, narrative learning, contextualized accounting instruction, accounting education, student-centred learning, accounting pedagogy, practical accounting education, accounting skills development, and polytechnic education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnics, accounting education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students' understanding of accounting principles. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Story-Based Instruction into accounting education programmes, developing curriculum-aligned accounting narratives, using realistic Nigerian business situations to explain accounting principles, incorporating case-based stories into difficult accounting topics, training accounting educators in effective educational storytelling, combining storytelling with practical accounting exercises, encouraging students to create and explain accounting stories, using digital and multimedia storytelling where appropriate, developing competency-based assessments of accounting principles understanding, and aligning accounting education with the analytical, conceptual, communication, and practical competencies required in contemporary accounting practice in Nigeria.
