Effect of Students’ Prior Accounting Knowledge on Achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the effect of students’ prior accounting knowledge on their achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting in Nigeria. Prior accounting knowledge refers to the knowledge, concepts, principles, procedures and skills that students have acquired from previously studied accounting courses before being introduced to more advanced financial accounting topics. Advanced Financial Accounting is an important area of accounting education that requires students to build upon foundational accounting knowledge in order to understand and solve complex accounting problems. The subject involves advanced concepts and procedures relating to financial reporting, partnership accounting, company accounts, business combinations, consolidated financial statements, accounting for changes in ownership interests, interpretation of financial information and other advanced accounting practices. Students are therefore expected to possess adequate foundational knowledge before they can effectively understand and apply more complex accounting principles. This study investigated whether students’ prior accounting knowledge has a significant effect on their achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting in Nigeria. The study was motivated by concerns about differences in students’ academic performance when they encounter advanced accounting courses. Accounting education is structured progressively, with students expected to build new knowledge upon concepts and skills acquired in earlier courses. Students who have a strong understanding of basic financial accounting principles may find it easier to understand advanced topics because they can connect new concepts with previously acquired knowledge. On the other hand, students with weak foundational knowledge may experience difficulties when dealing with complex accounting issues because they may need to learn basic concepts while simultaneously attempting to understand advanced topics. Such difficulties may affect their ability to solve problems, interpret accounting information and achieve satisfactory academic results. The study therefore examined prior accounting knowledge as an important academic foundation for achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting students who had enrolled in Advanced Financial Accounting courses in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on students’ prior accounting knowledge and their achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting. The prior accounting knowledge component covered students’ understanding of fundamental accounting concepts, accounting principles, double-entry procedures, preparation of financial statements, adjustments, accounting classifications, basic financial reporting and other foundational accounting skills. Students’ achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting was assessed based on their ability to understand advanced accounting concepts, apply accounting procedures, perform complex accounting calculations, prepare advanced financial statements, analyze accounting information and solve advanced accounting problems. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the data obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether students’ prior accounting knowledge has a statistically significant effect on their achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting. The study is expected to establish that students’ prior accounting knowledge has a significant effect on their achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting. Students who possess adequate foundational accounting knowledge may be better prepared to understand advanced accounting concepts and apply them correctly. Prior knowledge can provide students with the conceptual framework required to recognize accounting relationships, follow complex accounting procedures and solve problems that involve multiple stages of analysis. For example, a student with a strong understanding of basic financial statements may find it easier to understand the preparation and interpretation of consolidated financial statements. Similarly, knowledge of fundamental accounting principles can assist students in understanding more complex financial reporting issues. The study further recognizes that prior knowledge facilitates the connection between existing knowledge and new learning. Advanced Financial Accounting contains concepts that are not entirely independent of earlier accounting courses. Instead, many advanced topics require students to recall and apply principles previously learned. Students may need to understand basic accounting treatments before they can successfully deal with complex transactions, adjustments and financial reporting situations. When students have adequate prior knowledge, they may spend less time attempting to recall fundamental concepts and more time concentrating on the advanced accounting issues presented in a problem. This can improve their efficiency and accuracy when solving Advanced Financial Accounting questions. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students because they may increase awareness of the importance of mastering foundational accounting courses before progressing to advanced areas of study. Students may be encouraged to revise previously learned accounting concepts before commencing Advanced Financial Accounting courses. Regular revision of fundamental principles, financial statement preparation, accounting procedures and basic problem-solving techniques may help students develop a stronger foundation for advanced learning. Students may also benefit from identifying weaknesses in their prior accounting knowledge early and seeking academic assistance before such weaknesses affect their performance in advanced courses. The findings will also be beneficial to Accounting lecturers. The study may provide lecturers with information about the importance of students’ prior knowledge when teaching Advanced Financial Accounting. Lecturers may begin advanced topics by briefly reviewing relevant foundational concepts and identifying areas where students demonstrate significant knowledge gaps. Diagnostic exercises, revision activities, short tests and introductory problem-solving exercises can help lecturers determine whether students possess the required background knowledge. Where weaknesses are identified, appropriate remedial instruction can be provided before more complex topics are introduced. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and educational administrators. The findings may provide a basis for ensuring that accounting courses are appropriately sequenced so that students acquire the necessary foundational knowledge before progressing to advanced courses. Curriculum planners should examine the relationship between prerequisite courses and advanced accounting subjects to ensure that important concepts and skills are introduced progressively. Appropriate course sequencing can help reduce unnecessary learning difficulties and provide students with a stronger academic foundation. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of prerequisite knowledge in accounting education. Advanced accounting subjects should not be viewed as completely separate areas of study because they often require students to integrate knowledge acquired from several earlier courses. Students may need to combine financial accounting knowledge, numerical skills, financial reporting principles and analytical abilities when solving advanced accounting problems. A strong foundation can therefore improve students’ ability to integrate different forms of accounting knowledge and apply them to complex situations. The study also emphasizes the importance of diagnostic assessment before and during Advanced Financial Accounting instruction. Lecturers can use diagnostic tests to determine students’ existing level of accounting knowledge and identify specific areas that require reinforcement. Such assessment does not necessarily have to contribute significantly to students’ grades; rather, it can provide information that guides instruction. By identifying knowledge gaps at an early stage, lecturers may provide targeted revision and additional learning materials to help students prepare for advanced accounting content. The use of practical learning activities may also strengthen the relationship between prior knowledge and achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting. Students can be provided with accounting cases that require them to apply basic principles before introducing more complex accounting situations. This approach can help students see how foundational concepts are extended and applied in advanced accounting practice. Practical exercises involving financial statements, business transactions and financial reporting scenarios can also help students integrate their existing knowledge with new concepts. Technology-supported learning may provide additional opportunities for students to strengthen prior accounting knowledge. Digital learning platforms, accounting tutorials, electronic textbooks, online practice exercises and accounting software can enable students to review foundational concepts independently. Students can use such resources to revisit areas they find difficult before and during Advanced Financial Accounting courses. Lecturers may also use digital quizzes and learning activities to identify areas of weak prior knowledge and provide targeted instructional support. The study may also have implications for teaching strategies. Advanced Financial Accounting lecturers should recognize that students may enter their courses with different levels of prior knowledge. A uniform teaching approach may not adequately address these differences. Lecturers may therefore adopt instructional strategies that provide opportunities for revision, guided practice and progressive development of accounting knowledge. Complex accounting problems can be introduced gradually, beginning with relevant foundational principles and progressing toward more advanced applications. This approach may improve students’ ability to connect previous learning with new accounting knowledge. Assessment practices should also reflect the cumulative nature of accounting learning. Examinations and continuous assessment activities in Advanced Financial Accounting may require students to integrate knowledge from earlier accounting courses with advanced concepts. Students should therefore be assessed on their ability to apply accounting knowledge to complex situations rather than simply reproduce isolated definitions or procedures. Well-structured assessment can help determine whether students have developed the integrated knowledge and skills required for advanced accounting study. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian tertiary institutions should strengthen foundational accounting instruction before students progress to Advanced Financial Accounting. Accounting departments should ensure that prerequisite courses adequately cover the concepts, principles and procedures required for advanced study. Students should also be encouraged to revise relevant foundational topics before commencing advanced courses. The study further recommends that lecturers should conduct diagnostic assessments at the beginning of Advanced Financial Accounting courses to identify students’ existing knowledge and areas of weakness. Where significant knowledge gaps are identified, lecturers should provide appropriate revision activities, remedial instruction and additional learning resources. Students should also be encouraged to participate actively in revision exercises and seek academic support when necessary. Curriculum planners should ensure appropriate sequencing of accounting courses and clearly identify prerequisite knowledge required for advanced subjects. Universities should also provide adequate instructional resources, including current accounting textbooks, practical exercises, digital learning materials and other resources that enable students to reinforce foundational accounting knowledge. Departments may also organize tutorial sessions and academic support programmes for students who require additional assistance. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of students’ prior accounting knowledge in achieving success in Advanced Financial Accounting in Nigeria. Advanced accounting learning builds substantially upon foundational concepts, principles and skills acquired from earlier accounting courses. Students with adequate prior knowledge may be better positioned to understand complex accounting concepts, integrate different areas of accounting knowledge, solve advanced problems and interpret financial information accurately. Strengthening foundational accounting knowledge through effective prerequisite courses, diagnostic assessment, revision activities, practical learning and targeted academic support can therefore contribute to improved achievement in Advanced Financial Accounting and better preparation for subsequent academic and professional accounting responsibilities.
