Effect of Taxation Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Identify Taxable Benefits in Kind in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the effect of taxation knowledge on students’ ability to identify taxable benefits in kind in Nigeria. Taxation knowledge refers to students’ understanding of tax principles, rules, classifications, and practices, while the ability to identify taxable benefits in kind relates to students’ capacity to recognize non-cash benefits provided to employees that may be subject to taxation. The study was motivated by the difficulty some accounting and taxation students experience in distinguishing taxable benefits from ordinary employment benefits. The study therefore investigated whether adequate taxation knowledge improves students’ ability to correctly identify benefits in kind that are subject to taxation under the Nigerian tax system. Taxable benefits in kind may include certain forms of accommodation, vehicles, personal services, and other non-cash benefits provided to employees as part of their employment. Understanding how such benefits are treated for tax purposes is important for students studying accounting, taxation, and related disciplines. A lack of adequate taxation knowledge may result in students incorrectly classifying taxable and non-taxable benefits, particularly when faced with practical taxation problems. Developing a clear understanding of the relevant tax principles can therefore improve students’ ability to interpret taxation scenarios and apply tax rules correctly. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised students in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions, with an appropriate sample drawn using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ taxation knowledge and their ability to identify taxable benefits in kind. The instrument was validated by experts in accounting and taxation education, while reliability procedures were conducted to establish its consistency. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that taxation knowledge has a significant positive effect on students’ ability to identify taxable benefits in kind. Students with stronger knowledge of taxation principles are expected to demonstrate greater accuracy in recognizing benefits that should be considered for tax purposes. Improved taxation knowledge may also enable students to interpret employment-related tax situations more effectively and apply relevant tax rules when solving academic and practical problems. Conversely, inadequate knowledge may increase the likelihood of incorrect classification and misunderstanding of the tax treatment of benefits received by employees. The study also highlights the importance of practical approaches to taxation education in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Lecturers can improve students’ understanding by using practical examples of employee remuneration, workplace benefits, and taxation scenarios. Classroom exercises that require students to classify different benefits as taxable or non-taxable can also strengthen their understanding. Exposure to relevant tax legislation and realistic case studies may further help students connect theoretical taxation concepts with practical situations. These approaches can make taxation lessons more engaging while improving students’ ability to apply tax knowledge to real-world circumstances. The findings of the study are expected to be useful to students, taxation lecturers, accounting departments, curriculum developers, and other stakeholders involved in taxation education. For students, stronger taxation knowledge can improve their academic performance and provide a useful foundation for future professional responsibilities. Lecturers may use the findings to identify areas where students experience difficulties in understanding benefits in kind and improve their teaching methods. Curriculum developers may also incorporate more practical taxation exercises to ensure that students develop both theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply tax principles. The study recommends that Nigerian tertiary institutions should strengthen taxation education through practical examples, case studies, classification exercises, and regular assessment of students’ understanding of employee benefits and their tax implications. Lecturers should provide clear explanations of the distinction between taxable and non-taxable benefits and encourage students to apply taxation principles to practical situations. Students should also engage in independent study of relevant tax rules and practical taxation questions. Overall, the study concludes that adequate taxation knowledge is important for improving students’ ability to correctly identify taxable benefits in kind and strengthening their practical understanding of taxation in Nigeria.
