Effect of Workplace Communication Training on Professional Communication Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Professional communication skills are essential competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals are expected to communicate financial information clearly and appropriately with clients, colleagues, employers, managers, auditors, government agencies, and other stakeholders. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to develop workplace-specific communication skills beyond conventional classroom activities. Difficulties in communicating financial information, preparing professional correspondence, participating in meetings, presenting reports, responding to clients, listening effectively, and communicating through digital platforms may affect students’ preparedness for professional accounting environments. Workplace Communication Training provides structured opportunities for students to develop and practise communication competencies required in real work settings. Such training may improve students’ verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation, listening, digital, and professional communication abilities. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Workplace Communication Training on professional communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Social Cognitive Theory explains how students develop communication behaviours through observation, modelling, practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes the development of practical communication competence through concrete workplace experiences, reflection, application, and repeated practice. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in communication competencies can improve students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional employment. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Workplace Communication Training may influence professional communication skills among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Workplace Communication Training will be assessed using indicators such as workplace communication orientation, professional speaking activities, business communication training, verbal communication exercises, written communication exercises, professional email writing, business-letter writing, memo writing, report writing, workplace-document preparation, financial-report communication, accounting-information presentation, oral presentation activities, public-speaking exercises, meeting participation, meeting simulation, business-meeting communication, telephone communication, telephone etiquette, client communication, customer communication, interpersonal communication, active listening, questioning techniques, clarification techniques, feedback skills, professional vocabulary, accounting terminology, financial-information explanation, technical-information communication, communication with non-accounting audiences, communication with supervisors, communication with colleagues, communication with clients, communication with customers, communication with auditors, communication with managers, communication with government officials, communication with business owners, negotiation communication, conflict communication, complaint-handling communication, persuasion skills, professional courtesy, workplace etiquette, professional tone, respectful communication, non-verbal communication, body-language awareness, eye-contact practice, professional appearance, workplace confidence, communication anxiety management, presentation planning, presentation organization, presentation delivery, use of visual aids, financial-data presentation, spreadsheet-information presentation, chart and table explanation, report summarization, executive-summary communication, business-proposal presentation, accounting-case presentation, group presentation, individual presentation, seminar presentation, professional briefing, workplace briefing, interview communication, job-interview practice, mock interviews, recruitment communication, professional networking communication, career communication, curriculum-vitae communication, cover-letter writing, job-application communication, employer communication, professional telephone calls, professional voicemail, email etiquette, digital communication, instant-messaging etiquette, virtual-meeting communication, video-conferencing communication, online collaboration, professional social-media communication, workplace information sharing, communication-channel selection, formal communication, informal workplace communication, upward communication, downward communication, horizontal communication, cross-functional communication, team communication, leadership communication, supervisory communication, client-reporting communication, customer-service communication, accounting-advisory communication, audit communication, tax communication, financial-analysis communication, professional writing, technical writing, business writing, concise writing, coherent writing, accurate writing, grammar and punctuation practice, proofreading, editing, document-review activities, communication-error identification, communication-error correction, professional correspondence, workplace notices, business announcements, internal communication, external communication, stakeholder communication, confidentiality in communication, ethical communication, communication professionalism, communication responsibility, workplace communication scenarios, role-play activities, client-interaction simulations, customer-interaction simulations, meeting simulations, negotiation simulations, conflict-resolution simulations, presentation simulations, telephone simulations, email simulations, report-presentation simulations, workplace case studies, accounting-workplace scenarios, communication workshops, communication seminars, communication coaching, communication mentoring, peer communication practice, lecturer-guided communication activities, employer engagement, professional-accountant interaction, industry visits, workplace observation, internship preparation, industrial-training preparation, workplace communication assessment, communication rubrics, communication checklists, self-assessment, peer assessment, lecturer feedback, employer feedback where available, repeated communication practice, progressively challenging communication activities, and opportunities to apply professional communication skills to realistic accounting workplace situations. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Workplace Communication Training, communication experiences, and levels of professional communication competence. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Workplace Communication Training on professional communication skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ professional communication scores before and after exposure to Workplace Communication Training may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Workplace Communication Training has a significant positive effect on professional communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured workplace communication activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to communicate accounting and business information clearly, accurately, confidently, and professionally. Verbal communication exercises may improve students’ ability to explain accounting concepts, financial results, and business recommendations. Professional vocabulary training may strengthen students’ use of appropriate accounting terminology. Financial-information communication activities may help students explain complex financial information to clients and other non-accounting audiences. Presentation activities may improve students’ ability to organize and deliver accounting reports, financial statements, tables, charts, and business recommendations. Public-speaking practice may increase confidence and reduce communication anxiety. Meeting simulations may strengthen students’ ability to participate appropriately in professional discussions. Active-listening activities may improve students’ ability to understand instructions, client needs, and workplace concerns. Questioning and clarification activities may help students obtain accurate information before making accounting decisions. Feedback activities may strengthen students’ ability to give and receive constructive professional feedback. Written communication exercises may improve students’ ability to prepare emails, business letters, memos, reports, and other workplace documents. Business-writing practice may improve clarity, coherence, accuracy, conciseness, grammar, and professional tone. Proofreading and editing activities may help students identify and correct communication errors. Telephone simulations may strengthen professional telephone etiquette and client communication. Client and customer-interaction activities may prepare students to communicate effectively with different stakeholders. Negotiation and conflict-communication activities may improve students’ ability to manage disagreements professionally. Complaint-handling simulations may strengthen students’ ability to respond appropriately to difficult workplace situations. Non-verbal communication activities may improve students’ awareness of body language, eye contact, posture, and professional presentation. Digital communication training may improve students’ ability to use email, professional messaging platforms, virtual meetings, video-conferencing tools, and online collaboration systems appropriately. Workplace communication scenarios may help students adapt their communication style to different professional contexts. Formal and informal communication activities may improve students’ ability to select appropriate communication approaches. Stakeholder communication activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate with supervisors, colleagues, clients, auditors, managers, business owners, government officials, and other stakeholders. Accounting-workplace simulations may help students apply communication skills to realistic professional situations. Interview practice may improve students’ ability to respond confidently to recruitment questions. Professional-networking activities may help students communicate effectively with practitioners and potential employers. Employer engagement may expose students to actual workplace communication expectations. Industry visits and workplace observations may help students understand professional communication norms. Internship and industrial-training preparation may improve students’ readiness for workplace communication. Communication coaching and mentoring may provide individualized guidance. Peer practice may provide opportunities for repeated communication activities. Self-assessment may help students identify weaknesses in their communication. Feedback from lecturers, peers, and industry personnel may help students correct communication deficiencies. Repeated practice may improve communication fluency and confidence. Progressively challenging activities may prepare students to communicate effectively in increasingly complex professional situations. However, the effectiveness of Workplace Communication Training may be constrained by inadequate communication facilities, limited access to digital technologies, insufficient opportunities for workplace simulation, large class sizes, limited lecturer supervision, inadequate industry partnerships, insufficient employer engagement, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, students’ weak prior communication skills, communication anxiety, limited vocabulary, inadequate knowledge of accounting terminology, low student participation, insufficient practical activities, limited exposure to authentic workplace environments, inadequate feedback, outdated instructional materials, and weak integration of workplace communication training into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects practical, structured, industry-relevant, learner-centred, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Workplace Communication Training to contribute significantly to improved professional communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Workplace Communication Training, professional communication skills, Social Cognitive Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, employability skills, workplace readiness, graduate employability, professional communication, business communication, accounting communication, verbal communication, written communication, oral communication, business writing, professional writing, financial-information communication, presentation skills, public speaking, active listening, questioning skills, feedback skills, meeting communication, telephone etiquette, client communication, customer communication, interpersonal communication, negotiation, conflict communication, complaint handling, professional etiquette, non-verbal communication, digital communication, virtual communication, online collaboration, professional email communication, stakeholder communication, technical communication, accounting terminology, financial-report communication, audit communication, tax communication, financial-analysis communication, career communication, interview communication, professional networking, employer engagement, workplace simulation, role play, industry exposure, internship preparation, industrial training, communication assessment, communication confidence, communication competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and accounting education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnics, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, career-services units, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ professional communication competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Workplace Communication Training into Accounting Education programmes, incorporating practical workplace communication exercises into accounting courses, strengthening business-writing and professional-email training, providing regular opportunities for oral presentations and financial-information communication, using workplace simulations and role-play activities, strengthening students’ active-listening and interpersonal communication skills, providing meeting and telephone-communication simulations, incorporating client and stakeholder communication activities, strengthening digital and virtual workplace communication skills, organizing mock interviews and professional-networking activities, expanding employer and industry engagement, providing communication coaching and mentoring, incorporating peer and self-assessment activities, providing regular feedback on communication performance, improving access to digital communication technologies, expanding workplace-oriented learning opportunities, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary professional communication requirements in Nigerian polytechnics.
