Impact of Academic Writing Skills on Research Report Quality among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Academic writing skills are essential to the successful preparation of research reports among Accounting Education students because research requires the clear presentation of ideas, logical organization of information, appropriate use of academic language, accurate citation and referencing, critical analysis, and coherent communication of findings. However, some Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties in expressing research ideas clearly, organizing research reports, reviewing relevant literature, documenting sources, presenting arguments, and communicating research findings in an academically acceptable manner. These difficulties may affect the quality, clarity, credibility, and overall usefulness of students’ research reports. Academic writing skills provide students with the competencies required to communicate research ideas effectively and present scholarly work according to accepted academic standards. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of academic writing skills on research report quality among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on the Process Theory of Writing, Social Cognitive Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. The Process Theory of Writing explains academic writing as a continuous process involving planning, drafting, revising, editing, and producing a final written document. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the development of writing competence through observation, modelling, practice, feedback, self-efficacy, and interaction with lecturers and peers. Constructivist Learning Theory explains how students actively construct knowledge by connecting previous understanding with new information while developing and communicating research ideas. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how academic writing skills may influence the quality of research reports produced by Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical or correlational research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select polytechnics, departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, academic writing skills assessment instruments, research-writing tasks, research reports, report-assessment rubrics, lecturers’ evaluation scores, citation and referencing exercises, and relevant academic performance records. Academic writing skills will be assessed using indicators such as topic development, idea generation, research-question formulation, objective formulation, thesis development, paragraph construction, sentence construction, grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, academic tone, clarity, coherence, cohesion, logical organization, argument development, critical thinking, analytical writing, synthesis, paraphrasing, summarization, quotation, citation, referencing, source evaluation, literature integration, evidence presentation, transition usage, introduction writing, literature-review writing, methodology writing, results presentation, discussion writing, conclusion writing, recommendation writing, abstract writing, proofreading, editing, revision, formatting, academic integrity, plagiarism awareness, use of scholarly sources, information-search skills, note-taking, outlining, drafting, peer review, feedback utilization, and overall academic writing competence. Research report quality will be assessed using indicators such as relevance of the research topic, clarity of the research problem, adequacy of background information, clarity of research objectives, alignment between research questions and objectives, quality of literature review, relevance of reviewed studies, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, methodology clarity, appropriateness of research design, population description, sampling procedure, instrument description, data-collection procedure, ethical considerations, data presentation, accuracy of analysis, interpretation of findings, discussion of results, linkage of findings with previous studies, conclusion consistency, relevance of recommendations, quality of abstract, organization of chapters, logical flow, academic language, grammatical accuracy, citation accuracy, referencing accuracy, source quality, evidence integration, originality, plagiarism control, formatting consistency, presentation of tables and figures, clarity of headings and subheadings, adherence to institutional guidelines, coherence across chapters, consistency of terminology, accuracy of references, completeness of documentation, proofreading quality, editing quality, overall scholarly presentation, and overall research report quality. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, academic writing skills, writing experiences, research-writing practices, and research report quality. Inferential statistical techniques, including Pearson correlation analysis, t-tests, analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of academic writing skills on research report quality. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, normality, multicollinearity, homoscedasticity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that academic writing skills have a significant positive impact on research report quality among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students with stronger academic writing skills are expected to produce research reports that demonstrate clearer organization, stronger arguments, better literature integration, more accurate citation and referencing, improved grammatical expression, and greater coherence across research chapters. Topic-development activities may improve students’ ability to focus their research reports on clearly defined issues. Idea-generation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to develop relevant research content. Research-question and objective-formulation activities may improve alignment between the purpose of the study and its written presentation. Thesis-development activities may strengthen students’ ability to establish clear arguments. Paragraph-construction exercises may improve logical organization and readability. Sentence-construction activities may strengthen clarity and grammatical accuracy. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary activities may improve the technical quality of students’ writing. Academic-tone exercises may encourage appropriate scholarly expression. Coherence and cohesion activities may strengthen the logical flow of ideas throughout research reports. Argument-development exercises may improve students’ ability to present and support research positions. Critical and analytical writing activities may strengthen students’ interpretation and evaluation of academic information. Synthesis exercises may improve students’ ability to combine information from different sources. Paraphrasing and summarization activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate source information in their own words. Citation and referencing exercises may improve the accuracy and completeness of source documentation. Source-evaluation activities may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish relevant and credible academic materials. Literature-integration exercises may improve the quality and relevance of literature reviews. Evidence-presentation activities may strengthen students’ ability to support arguments with appropriate research evidence. Introduction-writing activities may improve the presentation of the research background, problem, objectives, and significance. Literature-review writing activities may strengthen the organization and synthesis of previous studies. Methodology-writing activities may improve clarity in presenting research design, population, sampling, instruments, and data-collection procedures. Results-presentation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to communicate findings clearly. Discussion-writing activities may improve students’ ability to interpret findings and relate them to previous studies. Conclusion-writing activities may strengthen consistency between findings and conclusions. Recommendation-writing activities may improve the relevance and practicality of proposed solutions. Abstract-writing activities may strengthen students’ ability to summarize research studies effectively. Proofreading and editing exercises may reduce grammatical, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and referencing errors. Revision activities may improve the clarity and overall quality of research reports. Academic-integrity activities may strengthen students’ understanding of plagiarism and responsible scholarly writing. Scholarly-source activities may improve students’ ability to incorporate appropriate academic materials. Information-search activities may strengthen students’ ability to locate relevant literature. Note-taking and outlining activities may improve the organization of research ideas before writing. Drafting activities may strengthen students’ ability to develop complete research sections. Peer-review activities may expose students to alternative writing approaches and identify weaknesses in research reports. Feedback activities may help students correct writing errors and improve subsequent drafts. Overall, stronger academic writing skills are expected to contribute to improved research report quality among Accounting Education students. However, the effectiveness of academic writing skills in improving research report quality may be constrained by inadequate academic-writing instruction, limited access to scholarly databases and research materials, poor library resources, insufficient research supervision, large student populations, limited writing practice, inadequate lecturer feedback, weak proofreading practices, limited knowledge of citation and referencing styles, difficulties accessing credible academic sources, inadequate digital research skills, limited access to computers and reliable internet connectivity, plagiarism-related challenges, poor reading habits, limited vocabulary, weak grammar, inadequate critical-thinking skills, limited exposure to research methodology, time constraints, and inadequate integration of academic writing training into Accounting Education programmes. The study therefore expects systematic, practical, feedback-oriented, and research-focused development of academic writing skills to contribute significantly to improved research report quality among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on academic writing skills, research report quality, accounting education, research writing, scholarly communication, critical writing, analytical writing, academic literacy, citation and referencing, literature review, research methodology, research communication, academic integrity, plagiarism prevention, information-search skills, proofreading, editing, research competence, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, research-methodology lecturers, academic supervisors, librarians, curriculum developers, students, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students’ research-writing competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening academic writing instruction in Accounting Education programmes, providing practical writing exercises, improving access to scholarly resources, strengthening citation and referencing training, integrating academic writing with research-methodology courses, providing structured lecturer and peer feedback, improving students’ information-search and source-evaluation skills, strengthening proofreading and editing practices, promoting academic integrity, and improving the overall quality of research reports produced by Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
