Impact of Accounting Education on Students’ Ability to Identify Shareholders’ Rights in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting Education plays an important role in developing students’ knowledge of accounting principles, corporate practices, and professional responsibilities. Shareholders’ rights are an important aspect of corporate administration because they define the interests and entitlements of individuals who own shares in a company. However, students may have limited knowledge of these rights due to inadequate exposure to practical corporate accounting and governance concepts. This study therefore examines the impact of Accounting Education on students’ ability to identify shareholders’ rights in Nigerian Polytechnics. Accounting Education exposes students to financial accounting, company accounts, auditing, corporate governance, business law, and other areas relevant to corporate activities. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, and analysis of corporate information, students can develop knowledge of the relationship between companies and their shareholders. Accounting Education can also help students understand concepts relating to voting rights, dividend entitlements, participation in company meetings, access to relevant corporate information, and other rights associated with share ownership. Students’ ability to identify shareholders’ rights refers to their capacity to recognize, explain, and distinguish the rights available to shareholders within a company. This includes understanding rights relating to participation in company meetings, voting on relevant corporate matters, receiving declared dividends, accessing appropriate corporate information, and exercising other recognized shareholder interests. Effective Accounting Education is expected to improve students’ ability to identify these rights by providing the accounting and corporate knowledge required to understand the relationship between share ownership and corporate decision-making. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian Polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to Accounting Education and their ability to identify shareholders’ rights. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Accounting Education on students’ ability to identify shareholders’ rights. The study is expected to establish that Accounting Education has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to identify shareholders’ rights. Students with stronger exposure to accounting and corporate-related concepts are expected to demonstrate better ability to recognize and explain shareholders’ rights relating to voting, dividends, company meetings, and access to relevant corporate information. The study may also establish that practical learning activities involving company accounts and corporate governance can strengthen students’ understanding of shareholder interests. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in Nigerian Polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate practical corporate governance activities into classroom instruction to complement theoretical explanations. Case studies involving shareholder rights, analysis of company documents, and simulated corporate meetings may provide students with practical opportunities to identify and understand the rights associated with share ownership. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners, polytechnic administrators, corporate organizations, shareholders, and other stakeholders. Students may develop stronger knowledge of shareholder rights and improve their preparedness for professional accounting and corporate responsibilities. Lecturers may gain useful insight into practical approaches for teaching corporate accounting concepts, while curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen corporate governance and company administration content within Accounting Education programmes. The study recommends that Nigerian Polytechnics should strengthen Accounting Education through practical exercises, corporate governance case studies, company document analysis, and simulated shareholder meetings. Accounting lecturers should expose students to realistic examples of shareholder rights and guide them in identifying and explaining their relevance to corporate activities. The study concludes that effective Accounting Education can significantly enhance students’ ability to identify shareholders’ rights and better prepare them for professional accounting and corporate responsibilities.
