Impact of Accounting Education on Students’ Ability to Interpret Share Price Information in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting Education plays an important role in developing students’ knowledge and practical skills for understanding financial information and making informed financial decisions. Share price information is an important component of financial market information because it provides an indication of the market value and performance of a company’s shares. However, students may encounter difficulties in interpreting share price information due to limited exposure to practical investment analysis and financial market activities. This study therefore examines the impact of Accounting Education on students’ ability to interpret share price information in Nigerian Polytechnics. Accounting Education provides students with knowledge of financial accounting, financial statement analysis, investment concepts, financial reporting, and business performance evaluation. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, financial statement analysis, and case studies, students can develop the ability to understand financial information relating to business organizations. Exposure to accounting information can also help students understand factors associated with changes in share prices, including company performance, profitability, financial position, and other relevant market information. Students’ ability to interpret share price information refers to their capacity to understand and draw meaningful conclusions from information relating to the prices of company shares. This includes identifying changes in share prices, comparing price movements over time, understanding basic market trends, and relating share price information to relevant financial information about companies. Effective Accounting Education is expected to improve this ability by providing students with accounting knowledge and analytical skills that can be applied to the interpretation of share price information. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian Polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to Accounting Education and their ability to interpret share price information. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Accounting Education on students’ ability to interpret share price information. The study is expected to establish that Accounting Education has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to interpret share price information. Students with stronger accounting knowledge are expected to demonstrate greater ability to understand share price movements, compare market information, and relate share price changes to relevant financial information. The study may also establish that practical accounting activities involving financial reports and investment-related information can improve students’ ability to interpret share price information. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in Nigerian Polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate practical activities involving share prices, financial reports, market information, and company performance analysis into accounting instruction. The use of realistic financial market examples and practical exercises may help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with information encountered in investment and business environments. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners, polytechnic administrators, investors, and other stakeholders. Students may develop stronger financial analysis and investment-related skills, while lecturers may gain insight into approaches for improving students’ understanding of financial market information. Curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen accounting education programmes by incorporating relevant financial market interpretation skills into appropriate courses. The study recommends that Nigerian Polytechnics should strengthen Accounting Education through practical exercises involving share price information, financial statement analysis, company performance evaluation, and investment-related case studies. Accounting lecturers should expose students to realistic share price data and guide them in interpreting changes and relating such information to relevant accounting information. The study concludes that effective Accounting Education can significantly enhance students’ ability to interpret share price information and prepare them for informed financial and accounting decision-making.
