Impact of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Financial Information Required for Bank Credit Decisions in Nigeria

Abstract

Accounting education refers to the systematic teaching and learning of accounting concepts, principles, procedures, and practices that enable students to understand and apply financial information. Knowledge of financial information required for bank credit decisions is important to accounting students because banks rely on relevant financial information when assessing the creditworthiness and repayment capacity of individuals and businesses. However, some accounting students may have inadequate knowledge of the financial information banks require when evaluating loan applications and making credit decisions. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of accounting education on students’ knowledge of financial information required for bank credit decisions in Nigeria. Accounting education exposes students to financial statements, accounting records, financial analysis, and other forms of financial information used in business decision-making. Through financial accounting, management accounting, financial reporting, and related courses, students may learn about statements of financial position, income statements, cash flow information, accounting records, profitability measures, liquidity indicators, and other relevant financial information. Classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, and financial statement analysis can help students understand how different financial information is prepared and applied in evaluating business performance and financial capacity. Students’ knowledge of financial information required for bank credit decisions refers to their understanding of the types of financial information that may be considered when assessing a borrower’s financial position, performance, cash-generating capacity, existing obligations, and ability to repay borrowed funds. Such information may include financial statements, cash flow information, evidence of income, existing debt obligations, and relevant accounting records. Accounting education may improve students’ knowledge by exposing them to the purpose, content, and application of different financial information in financial decision-making. Developing this knowledge can strengthen students’ understanding of how accounting information supports lending and credit assessment. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the impact of accounting education on students’ knowledge of financial information required for bank credit decisions. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian institutions. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured knowledge assessment designed to measure students’ understanding of financial information relevant to bank credit decisions. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test employed to determine the impact of accounting education on students’ knowledge. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive impact on students’ knowledge of financial information required for bank credit decisions. Students who receive appropriate accounting instruction are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of relevant financial statements, cash flow information, income information, existing financial obligations, and other accounting information considered in credit assessment. The study is also expected to indicate that practical exposure to financial analysis and lending-related accounting situations can strengthen students’ understanding of how financial information supports bank credit decisions. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may place greater emphasis on the practical application of accounting information in financial decision-making, particularly in relation to bank lending and credit assessment. Students can be exposed to realistic loan assessment scenarios, financial statements, cash flow information, and other relevant accounting records. Such practical activities may help students connect classroom accounting knowledge with the financial information used by banks and other financial institutions when evaluating credit applications. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, financial institutions, and educational authorities. Students may benefit from improved knowledge of how accounting information supports credit decisions, while lecturers may gain useful information for strengthening practical accounting instruction. Accounting departments and curriculum planners may use the findings to incorporate more credit-related financial analysis into relevant courses. Financial institutions and other stakeholders may also benefit indirectly from accounting graduates with stronger knowledge of financial information and its application in lending decisions. The study recommends that accounting departments strengthen instruction on the preparation, interpretation, and application of financial information used in bank credit assessment. Lecturers should provide students with practical exercises involving financial statements, cash flow information, debt obligations, income information, and credit assessment scenarios. Students should also be encouraged to understand how different forms of accounting information contribute to financial decision-making rather than focusing solely on their preparation. The study concludes that effective accounting education can improve students’ knowledge of financial information required for bank credit decisions and strengthen their practical understanding of accounting information in financial decision-making.
