Impact of Accounting Education on Students’ Understanding of Deferred Tax Accounting in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting education refers to the systematic teaching and learning of accounting concepts, principles, procedures, and practices that enable students to understand and apply financial information. Understanding deferred tax accounting is important to accounting students because temporary differences between accounting and taxable amounts can affect reported tax expenses, assets, liabilities, and financial statements. However, some students may experience difficulties in understanding the concept of deferred tax, identifying temporary differences, and applying the appropriate accounting treatment. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of accounting education on students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting education exposes students to financial reporting concepts and accounting treatments relating to taxation and other complex financial statement items. In teaching deferred tax accounting, students may be introduced to temporary differences, taxable and deductible temporary differences, deferred tax assets, deferred tax liabilities, and the recognition and measurement of deferred tax balances. Lectures, worked examples, accounting exercises, case studies, and financial reporting problems can help students understand how deferred tax arises and how it is presented in financial statements. These learning activities may provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical principles to practical accounting situations. Students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting refers to their ability to explain the concept of deferred tax, identify temporary differences, distinguish deferred tax assets from deferred tax liabilities, and apply relevant accounting principles to appropriate financial reporting situations. Adequate understanding enables students to recognize how differences between accounting treatment and tax treatment can affect financial statements. Accounting education may improve this understanding by providing students with systematic explanations and practical exercises involving deferred tax calculations and accounting treatments. Developing this knowledge can strengthen students’ competence in applying financial reporting principles to taxation-related accounting issues. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the impact of accounting education on students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured achievement or competency test designed to assess students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting before and after relevant accounting instruction. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test employed to determine the impact of accounting education on students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive impact on students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting. Students who receive appropriate instruction are expected to demonstrate improved ability to explain deferred tax concepts, identify temporary differences, distinguish deferred tax assets from deferred tax liabilities, and apply relevant accounting treatments to practical situations. The study is also expected to indicate that the use of worked examples and practical accounting exercises can strengthen students’ comprehension of this specialized area of financial reporting. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical approaches when teaching deferred tax accounting rather than relying mainly on theoretical explanations. Students can be exposed to practical scenarios involving differences between accounting and taxable amounts, recognition of deferred tax balances, and presentation in financial statements. Step-by-step exercises and case-based activities may also help students develop a clearer understanding of the relationship between taxation and financial reporting. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, and polytechnic authorities. Students may benefit from improved understanding of deferred tax accounting and stronger financial reporting competence. Lecturers may gain useful information for improving the teaching of complex taxation and financial reporting concepts, while accounting departments and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen practical components of relevant accounting courses. Polytechnic authorities may also benefit from evidence supporting improved accounting education and students’ preparation for professional accounting responsibilities. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics strengthen practical instruction on deferred tax accounting through worked examples, case studies, financial reporting exercises, and classroom problem-solving activities. Lecturers should provide students with adequate opportunities to identify temporary differences, determine appropriate deferred tax balances, and apply relevant accounting treatments to realistic situations. Students should also be encouraged to develop both conceptual and practical understanding of deferred tax rather than relying solely on memorization. The study concludes that effective accounting education can improve students’ understanding of deferred tax accounting and strengthen their competence in applying financial reporting principles to taxation-related transactions.
