Impact of Accounting Education on Students’ Understanding of Share Valuation in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting education provides students with knowledge and skills required to understand financial information, investment decisions, corporate finance, and financial reporting. Share valuation refers to the process of determining the value of a company’s shares using relevant financial information, business performance indicators, market conditions, and valuation principles. Understanding share valuation is important to accounting students because they may be required to analyze financial information, evaluate investment opportunities, and support financial decisions in their future professional roles. However, some accounting students may have limited understanding of the principles and procedures used in valuing shares. This study therefore examines the impact of accounting education on students’ understanding of share valuation in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is intended to determine whether accounting education improves students’ understanding of share valuation concepts and processes. Accounting education exposes students to areas such as financial accounting, financial management, investment analysis, corporate finance, and financial statement analysis. Through these areas, students can learn about company performance, earnings, dividends, assets, liabilities, financial ratios, and other information that may be relevant to evaluating the value of shares. Classroom instruction, practical calculations, case studies, financial statement analysis, and investment-related exercises can provide students with opportunities to apply valuation principles. These learning experiences may help students understand how financial and business information can be used to assess the value of shares and support investment-related decisions. Understanding share valuation is important because accounting professionals may analyze financial statements and other corporate information used by investors and organizations when assessing investment opportunities. Students with adequate knowledge of share valuation may be better prepared to interpret relevant financial information, compare investment alternatives, and understand factors that influence the value of company shares. Accounting education can strengthen this understanding by connecting theoretical concepts with practical valuation exercises and realistic investment situations. The study will therefore assess the extent to which accounting education influences students’ understanding of share valuation. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will consist of accounting students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their understanding of share valuation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established using a suitable reliability technique. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the impact of accounting education on students’ understanding of share valuation. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive impact on students’ understanding of share valuation. Students with stronger exposure to relevant accounting education are expected to demonstrate better understanding of the factors, financial information, principles, and analytical processes involved in determining the value of company shares. The study may also establish that practical valuation exercises and financial statement analysis improve students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to investment-related situations. These expected findings would demonstrate the importance of accounting education in developing students’ knowledge of financial and investment analysis. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of accounting in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting educators could give greater attention to share valuation within relevant courses such as financial management, investment analysis, corporate finance, and financial accounting. Practical exercises involving company financial statements, earnings, dividends, financial ratios, and share valuation scenarios could help students develop a clearer understanding of the valuation process. Such approaches may strengthen students’ analytical skills and enable them to connect accounting information with investment and corporate financial decisions. The study will be significant to accounting students, lecturers, polytechnic administrators, professional accounting organizations, employers, investors, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may benefit from improved understanding of share valuation and greater preparedness for professional roles involving financial and investment analysis. Lecturers may use the findings to strengthen practical components of accounting instruction, while polytechnic administrators may use them to improve accounting learning resources and practical activities. Professional accounting organizations and employers may also benefit from graduates who possess stronger knowledge of financial analysis and share valuation concepts. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen the teaching of share valuation within relevant accounting and finance courses through practical calculations, financial statement analysis, case studies, investment scenarios, and other activity-based learning approaches. Accounting departments should expose students to relevant valuation principles and provide opportunities to analyze realistic corporate financial information. Lecturers should also connect share valuation concepts with financial reporting, corporate finance, investment analysis, and business decision-making. The study concludes that effective accounting education can significantly improve students’ understanding of share valuation and better prepare them for professional responsibilities involving financial and investment analysis.
