Impact of Accounting Education on the Use of Accounting Records in the Administration of Small Businesses in Nigeria

Abstract

Accounting education provides individuals with the knowledge and skills required to understand, prepare, interpret, and apply accounting information, while the use of accounting records refers to the application of recorded financial information in planning, controlling, monitoring, and administering business activities. Small businesses depend on accurate accounting records to monitor financial transactions, control resources, assess performance, and make informed administrative decisions. However, inadequate accounting knowledge may limit business owners’ ability to effectively use available accounting records in managing their operations. This study therefore examines the impact of accounting education on the use of accounting records in the administration of small businesses in Nigeria. Accounting education exposes learners to fundamental accounting concepts, transaction recording, source documents, books of original entry, ledgers, cash books, trial balances, financial statements, and financial information analysis. Through theoretical instruction and practical activities, students develop an understanding of how accounting records are prepared, organized, interpreted, and applied. This knowledge can provide business owners and prospective entrepreneurs with the ability to understand the information contained in accounting records and apply it appropriately in administering business operations. The use of accounting records in small-business administration involves applying financial information to monitor income and expenditure, control cash, track assets and liabilities, assess business performance, prepare budgets, and support administrative decisions. Accounting records can also provide information needed to identify financial trends and evaluate the financial consequences of business activities. Individuals with adequate accounting education are expected to be better positioned to understand and apply such information in the day-to-day administration of small businesses. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise owners and managers of selected small businesses in Nigeria. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the extent of accounting education and the use of accounting records in business administration. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a significant positive impact on the use of accounting records in the administration of small businesses. Business owners and managers with stronger accounting knowledge are expected to demonstrate greater ability to use financial records for monitoring transactions, controlling expenditure, evaluating business performance, planning activities, and making administrative decisions. The findings are also expected to emphasize the importance of accounting knowledge in converting recorded financial information into useful management information. The study will have important implications for Accounting Education and small-business development. Accounting educators may need to emphasize the practical application of accounting records rather than concentrating exclusively on their preparation. Practical exercises involving cash records, sales and expense records, financial statements, budgeting, and performance analysis can help learners understand how accounting information supports actual business administration. Such practical exposure can strengthen students’ preparedness for managing small businesses after graduation. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, small-business owners and managers, accounting lecturers, tertiary institutions, entrepreneurship educators, and curriculum developers. Students may acquire knowledge that can support future business administration, while existing small-business operators may benefit from improved understanding of accounting information. Accounting lecturers and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen practical accounting and entrepreneurship education programmes. The study recommends that accounting education programmes should incorporate practical activities that demonstrate the application of accounting records to small-business administration. Small-business owners should also be encouraged to acquire basic accounting knowledge and regularly use their accounting records when planning, controlling, and evaluating business activities. The study concludes that effective accounting education can improve the ability of small-business operators to use accounting records as an important administrative tool for informed decision-making and effective business management.
