Impact of Accounting for Borrowing Costs Education on Students’ Understanding of Finance Costs in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the impact of accounting for borrowing costs education on students’ understanding of finance costs in Nigeria. Borrowing costs are an important component of financial reporting because entities often obtain funds through loans and other forms of borrowing to finance their operations, acquire assets or undertake long-term projects. The accounting treatment of borrowing costs requires an understanding of the circumstances under which such costs are recognized as expenses and when they may be included in the cost of a qualifying asset. Therefore, adequate knowledge of borrowing costs accounting is essential for accounting students because it enables them to understand how interest and other costs associated with borrowing are identified, measured, recognized and presented in financial statements. However, students may experience difficulties in distinguishing borrowing costs from other finance-related expenses, determining the appropriate accounting treatment and understanding the circumstances under which borrowing costs may be capitalized. Such difficulties may affect their overall understanding of finance costs and their ability to apply relevant accounting principles to practical financial reporting situations. This study therefore examined whether education on accounting for borrowing costs has a significant impact on students’ understanding of finance costs in Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting students in selected Nigerian universities and other relevant tertiary institutions. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting for borrowing costs education and their understanding of finance costs. The instrument covered relevant areas including the meaning and nature of borrowing costs, types of borrowing costs, interest expenses, qualifying assets, capitalization of borrowing costs, recognition of borrowing costs as expenses, determination of the amount of borrowing costs eligible for capitalization, and presentation of finance costs in financial statements. Students’ understanding of finance costs was assessed based on their ability to identify, explain, classify and apply appropriate accounting treatments to borrowing and finance cost situations. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education and related fields to establish its suitability for the study. A reliability procedure was also conducted to determine the consistency of the instrument before its administration to the respondents. Data collected were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether accounting for borrowing costs education has a significant impact on students’ understanding of finance costs. The study specifically sought to establish whether adequate exposure to borrowing costs accounting concepts improves students’ ability to identify finance costs and understand their appropriate treatment in financial reporting. The study is expected to establish that effective education on accounting for borrowing costs can improve students’ understanding of finance costs. Adequate exposure to borrowing cost concepts may enable students to distinguish between finance costs that should be recognized as expenses and borrowing costs that may qualify for capitalization as part of the cost of a qualifying asset. It may also improve students’ ability to understand the relationship between borrowing, interest expenses and the measurement of financial statement items. A sound understanding of these concepts is important because accounting students need to develop both conceptual knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to apply accounting requirements to different financial reporting situations. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students, accounting lecturers, curriculum planners, university management and other stakeholders in accounting education. For students, the study may emphasize the importance of understanding the accounting treatment of borrowing costs as part of their broader financial reporting knowledge. A strong understanding of finance costs can assist students in analyzing accounting transactions, preparing financial statements and solving practical accounting problems. For accounting lecturers, the findings may provide useful information about students’ level of understanding of borrowing costs and areas where additional instructional attention may be required. The findings may also encourage lecturers to use practical examples, worked calculations, case studies and financial reporting exercises when teaching borrowing costs. The study will also be relevant to curriculum developers and educational administrators in Nigeria. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening the treatment of borrowing costs and finance costs in accounting education programmes. Accounting curricula should provide students with sufficient opportunities to understand the principles governing borrowing costs and apply them to realistic financial reporting situations. Educational institutions may further support effective teaching by providing current accounting standards, textbooks, professional publications, digital learning materials and other instructional resources that reflect contemporary financial reporting requirements. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of practical and application-based instruction in teaching borrowing costs. Students should be exposed to practical situations involving loans, interest expenses, qualifying assets and the capitalization of borrowing costs. Classroom exercises can require students to determine the amount of finance costs to be recognized as an expense and the amount that may qualify for capitalization. Such activities can help students understand the practical implications of borrowing costs accounting and strengthen their analytical and problem-solving abilities. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that accounting education programmes in Nigeria should strengthen the teaching of accounting for borrowing costs through a combination of theoretical explanations and practical applications. Accounting lecturers should provide students with regular exercises involving the identification, measurement, recognition and presentation of finance costs. Students should also be encouraged to study relevant financial reporting requirements and engage in practical accounting exercises involving borrowing transactions. Universities and other tertiary institutions should provide adequate and up-to-date instructional resources to support the effective teaching and learning of borrowing costs and related financial reporting concepts. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting for borrowing costs education in developing students’ understanding of finance costs in Nigeria. Effective education on borrowing costs can provide Accounting students with the conceptual knowledge and practical skills required to identify finance costs, understand their accounting treatment and apply relevant financial reporting principles. Strengthening borrowing costs education through practical, conceptual and application-based teaching approaches can therefore contribute to improved financial reporting knowledge and better preparation of accounting students for future academic and professional responsibilities.
