Impact of Accounting Formula Practice on Students’ Accuracy in Financial Calculations among Nigerian University Students

 

Abstract

This study examined the impact of accounting formula practice on students’ accuracy in financial calculations among Nigerian university students. Accounting formula practice refers to the regular and deliberate use of accounting formulas and computational exercises to develop students’ ability to recall, apply and manipulate mathematical relationships used in accounting. Financial calculations constitute an important component of accounting education because students are required to perform accurate computations in areas such as financial accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, financial reporting, taxation and other related accounting courses. Errors in financial calculations can affect the accuracy of accounting records, financial statements, financial analysis and decision-making. Regular practice with accounting formulas may therefore help students improve computational accuracy, reduce calculation errors and develop greater confidence in solving accounting problems. This study investigated whether accounting formula practice has a significant impact on students’ accuracy in financial calculations among Nigerian university students. The study was motivated by the observation that some accounting students experience difficulties when applying formulas to financial calculations, particularly when questions require them to identify the appropriate formula, substitute relevant figures correctly and interpret the resulting answer. Accounting formulas are used in several areas of accounting and finance, including calculations involving gross profit, net profit, depreciation, inventory valuation, working capital, ratios, cost behaviour, break-even analysis, contribution, margins and other financial measures. Students may memorize formulas without developing sufficient understanding of when and how they should be applied. Formula practice provides repeated opportunities for students to recall formulas, identify the appropriate variables, perform calculations and verify their answers. Such practice may contribute to improved computational accuracy and deeper understanding of accounting procedures. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on students’ accounting formula practice and their accuracy in financial calculations. The accounting formula practice component focused on the frequency of formula revision, practice with accounting calculations, application of formulas to different accounting problems, use of worked examples, independent practice and verification of calculated answers. Students’ accuracy in financial calculations was considered in relation to their ability to select appropriate formulas, substitute values correctly, perform calculations accurately, follow appropriate computational procedures and arrive at correct financial results. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether accounting formula practice has a statistically significant impact on students’ accuracy in financial calculations. The study is expected to establish that accounting formula practice has a significant impact on students’ accuracy in financial calculations. Students who regularly practice accounting formulas may demonstrate greater accuracy because repeated practice can strengthen their ability to recall relevant formulas and apply them correctly. Regular calculation exercises may also enable students to become familiar with different question formats and recognize the information required for particular financial computations. As students practice repeatedly, they may become more capable of identifying the appropriate formula, arranging information correctly and checking their calculations before presenting final answers. Formula practice may be particularly important because different accounting calculations require different relationships among financial variables. Students must understand the purpose of each formula and the circumstances in which it should be applied. For example, a student may need to determine whether a question requires a profitability ratio, liquidity ratio, contribution calculation or break-even calculation. Regular practice can expose students to different accounting situations and help them develop the ability to match particular problems with appropriate formulas. The study further recognizes the importance of understanding formulas rather than simply memorizing them. Memorization without understanding may result in errors when the format of a question changes or when information is presented differently from classroom examples. Students who understand the meaning of the variables within a formula may be better able to adapt the formula to different financial problems. Formula practice should therefore involve explanation of the underlying accounting relationship as well as repeated calculation. Substitution accuracy is another important component of financial calculation. Students may know the correct formula but still produce incorrect answers if they enter the wrong figures or confuse financial variables. Regular practice can help students develop careful approaches to identifying and substituting relevant information. Students can also learn to verify whether the figures they have selected correspond with the requirements of the formula. The study also highlights the importance of arithmetic accuracy. Accounting calculations may involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios and other mathematical operations. Small arithmetic errors can lead to incorrect financial results even when the appropriate accounting formula has been selected. Repeated practice can improve students’ familiarity with these calculations and encourage them to check their work systematically. The findings of the study will be useful to accounting students because they may increase awareness of the importance of regular calculation practice. Students can improve their financial calculation skills by practicing formulas consistently rather than studying them only immediately before examinations. They can maintain formula sheets, solve practice questions, review incorrect answers and repeat calculations until they can apply the relevant formulas confidently. The findings will also be beneficial to accounting lecturers in Nigerian universities. The study may provide lecturers with information about the contribution of formula practice to students’ computational accuracy. Lecturers can incorporate regular formula-based exercises into accounting lessons and provide students with opportunities to solve both simple and complex financial calculations. Classroom practice can be followed by feedback to help students understand and correct calculation errors. Lecturers can also introduce progressively challenging formula exercises. Students can begin with straightforward calculations involving direct substitution before progressing to questions that require them to interpret financial information, select appropriate formulas and combine multiple calculations. This gradual progression can strengthen students’ confidence and ability to solve complex financial problems. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and accounting departments. The findings may provide a basis for emphasizing practical computational competence within accounting education. Accounting courses should provide students with sufficient opportunities to apply formulas to realistic financial situations rather than focusing exclusively on theoretical explanations. Regular calculation activities can help students connect accounting concepts with numerical application. Worked examples can also support formula learning. Lecturers can demonstrate how to identify the relevant information in a question, select the appropriate formula, substitute values, perform calculations and interpret the final result. Students can then attempt similar questions independently. Comparing their solutions with worked examples can help them identify errors and improve their calculation procedures. The study further recognizes the importance of answer verification. Students should be encouraged to review their calculations and determine whether their answers are reasonable. Checking calculations can involve repeating arithmetic operations, reviewing substituted figures, examining units and comparing results with expected ranges. Developing such habits can reduce avoidable financial calculation errors. Technology can provide additional opportunities for formula practice. Spreadsheet applications, accounting software, online accounting quizzes and digital learning platforms can enable students to practice calculations repeatedly. These tools can provide immediate feedback and allow students to experiment with different financial values. However, students should first develop an understanding of the accounting principles and formulas underlying the calculations rather than depending entirely on automated tools. Accounting formula practice may also contribute to students’ performance in professional examinations and future accounting responsibilities. Accountants frequently perform financial calculations and analyze numerical information. Accuracy is essential because computational errors may affect financial reports, budgets, cost analyses, performance evaluations and business decisions. Developing strong calculation habits during university education may therefore improve students’ professional readiness. The study also highlights the relationship between formula practice and problem-solving skills. Financial accounting problems often require students to identify relevant information, determine the appropriate computational approach and interpret the resulting answer. Formula practice can help students become familiar with these stages and develop more systematic approaches to solving accounting problems.  Assessment practices can also reinforce formula practice. Lecturers can include regular calculation questions in quizzes, assignments, continuous assessments and examinations. Assessments should include different levels of difficulty and require students to apply formulas to varied financial situations. This can provide students with opportunities to demonstrate both formula knowledge and practical computational competence. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian universities should encourage regular accounting formula practice among accounting students. Lecturers should provide frequent calculation exercises covering relevant accounting formulas and should ensure that students understand the meaning and application of each formula. Practice should be distributed throughout the semester rather than concentrated only during examination periods. The study further recommends that lecturers should provide timely feedback on students’ calculations. Students should be shown where errors occurred, whether the problem involved formula selection, substitution, arithmetic or interpretation, and how the error can be corrected. This can help students develop more accurate and systematic calculation procedures. Accounting departments should also provide students with appropriate learning materials containing formula summaries, worked examples, practice questions and solutions. Access to these materials can encourage independent practice and allow students to reinforce classroom learning. Students should be encouraged to develop personal formula-practice routines. They can revise formulas regularly, solve different types of accounting calculations, record common errors and practice questions without immediately consulting solutions. They should also develop the habit of checking their calculations before submitting answers. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting formula practice in improving students’ accuracy in financial calculations among Nigerian university students. Financial calculations require students to combine accounting knowledge, formula selection, accurate substitution, mathematical operations and careful verification. Regular formula practice can strengthen students’ ability to recall and apply accounting formulas, reduce computational errors and improve confidence in solving financial problems. Integrating structured formula practice, worked examples, practical accounting problems, feedback, continuous assessment and appropriate digital learning tools into accounting education can therefore contribute to improved financial calculation accuracy and stronger accounting competence among Nigerian university students.
