Impact of Accounting Internship Experience on Students’ Professional Communication Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting internship experience is an important component of accounting education because it provides students with opportunities to apply classroom knowledge within real or simulated professional work environments. Students’ professional communication skills are essential for effective interaction with clients, colleagues, supervisors, employers, and other stakeholders in accounting practice. However, classroom-based accounting education may provide limited opportunities for students to develop and practice professional communication in workplace situations. This study therefore examines the impact of accounting internship experience on students’ professional communication skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting internship experience involves students’ participation in supervised workplace activities where they are exposed to practical accounting tasks, organizational procedures, professional interactions, and workplace responsibilities. During internship placements, students may communicate with supervisors, colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders through verbal discussions, telephone conversations, emails, reports, presentations, and other professional channels. Such experiences can provide students with opportunities to observe professional communication practices, receive workplace feedback, and develop appropriate communication behaviours. Students’ professional communication skills refer to their ability to communicate clearly, appropriately, confidently, and professionally in workplace situations. These skills include verbal communication, written communication, active listening, professional correspondence, presentation, interpersonal interaction, and appropriate use of professional language. Developing these skills is important for Accounting Education students because effective communication supports accurate exchange of financial information, teamwork, client interaction, and successful performance of accounting responsibilities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics who have participated in accounting internship experiences. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on accounting internship experience and students’ professional communication skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while the hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting internship experience has a significant positive impact on students’ professional communication skills. Exposure to workplace environments is expected to improve students’ ability to communicate with colleagues and clients, prepare professional written communication, listen effectively, participate in workplace discussions, and communicate accounting information appropriately. The findings are expected to have important implications for accounting education and internship programmes in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting departments may need to strengthen the practical and communication components of internship preparation by providing students with pre-internship orientation, workplace communication training, and opportunities to practice professional communication before and during their placements. Regular supervision and constructive feedback may also help students improve their communication performance. The study is expected to benefit Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, polytechnic administrators, internship coordinators, employers, and curriculum developers. Students may develop stronger professional communication skills and greater confidence in workplace interactions, while lecturers and internship coordinators may gain useful insights for improving students’ practical experiences. Employers may also benefit from graduates who are better prepared to communicate effectively in professional accounting environments. The study recommends that polytechnics should strengthen accounting internship programmes by ensuring that students receive meaningful workplace exposure and opportunities to practice professional communication. Pre-internship orientation, communication workshops, workplace supervision, reflective activities, and employer feedback should be incorporated into internship programmes. The study concludes that effective accounting internship experience can enhance students’ professional communication skills and contribute to their readiness for professional accounting practice.
