Abstract

Accounting interpretation skills refer to students’ ability to understand, analyze, explain, and draw meaningful conclusions from accounting information, while professional decision-making competence refers to students’ ability to evaluate accounting situations, consider relevant information, and make appropriate decisions in professional accounting contexts. Effective interpretation of accounting information is important because accountants are frequently required to examine financial data and use their understanding to support sound professional judgments and decisions. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of accounting interpretation skills on the professional decision-making competence of accounting education students in Nigeria. Accounting interpretation skills involve the ability to read and understand financial statements, interpret accounting figures, analyze financial information, identify significant changes, and draw appropriate conclusions from accounting data. Through financial statement analysis, accounting exercises, case studies, classroom discussions, and practical accounting activities, students can develop the ability to move beyond recording financial information to understanding its meaning and implications. Strong interpretation skills can provide students with a useful foundation for applying accounting information to professional situations. Professional decision-making competence refers to students’ ability to identify accounting problems, evaluate relevant financial information, compare available alternatives, and select appropriate courses of action based on accounting principles and professional considerations. Accounting education students require this competence because professional accounting practice involves making or supporting decisions concerning financial reporting, resource allocation, business performance, risk, and other organizational matters. Accounting interpretation skills can enhance this competence by enabling students to understand the financial information needed for informed professional decisions. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. Data will be collected using an accounting interpretation skills assessment and a professional decision-making competence assessment designed to measure students’ ability to interpret accounting information and make appropriate professional decisions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to test the hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting interpretation skills have a significant positive impact on the professional decision-making competence of accounting education students. Students who demonstrate stronger abilities to interpret financial information are expected to demonstrate better competence in evaluating accounting situations, comparing alternatives, and reaching appropriate professional decisions. The study may also identify areas of interpretation where students require additional practical training to strengthen their decision-making abilities. The findings are expected to have important implications for accounting teaching and learning. Accounting lecturers can strengthen students’ professional decision-making competence by incorporating financial statement interpretation, case analysis, accounting scenarios, and decision-oriented exercises into accounting courses. Students should be encouraged to explain the meaning and implications of accounting information rather than focusing only on calculations. This approach can help them develop the analytical abilities required for professional accounting decisions. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, universities, polytechnics, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may develop stronger abilities to interpret accounting information and apply it when making professional decisions, while lecturers and institutions may use the findings to improve accounting instruction and assessment. Employers and professional bodies may also benefit from graduates who possess stronger analytical and decision-making competence. The study recommends that Accounting Education programmes should strengthen accounting interpretation activities through financial statement analysis, practical case studies, accounting data interpretation exercises, and decision-making scenarios. Lecturers should provide students with regular opportunities to interpret accounting information and justify decisions based on their analysis. It is concluded that strong accounting interpretation skills can enhance the professional decision-making competence of accounting education students and better prepare them for the analytical and decision-oriented demands of professional accounting practice.
